losing weight with type 2 diabetes

Hi All

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my age ( 57 ) and weight ( 111kg ) and lifestyle ( working in an office all day ) were certainly contributary factors.

I find the online advice ( and even my doctor's advice ) confusing if not contradictory.

I get I need to reduce carbs ..but to what? Some medical opinions say areound 50g per meal. Some say under 50g a day.

Some say You should just eat all fats and protein ( as much as you want ) but I know that to lose weight I have to reduce my calorific intake and eating a wheel of edam a day won't do that!

Does anyone who has been through a weightloss plan with diabetes have any tips to share?

Thanks in advance

    Welcome!

It's great that you're trying to look at things from an informed mind. That's great. I would ask my doctor to refer me to a registered dietician to help design a program that supported weight loss and didn't create risks for a diagnosed health challenge.

I would NOT necessarily listen to people (like me) on the internet who don't know your personal history or may be approaching things from an uninformed space. There's lots of good advice here, and there's some that isn't so good. Give yourself a jump start and schedule some time with a professional. Not a nutritionist - a Registered Dietician.

My experience when I have a pre-diabetic HbA1C come back was I went Keto 20-30 grams of carbs a day, the remainder made up of protein and fat. I did count my calories, but quite quickly I discovered, at least for me, that eating a fair amount of protein and fat filled me up quickly and kept me full for much longer than the higher fiber plants based meals I was eating to lose weight before those blood test results. My blood glucose numbers got into a normal range in a matter of a week or two, and my A1C is normal now. I am moved to even more animal based over time, so I would be classified as Ketovore at the moment, but when I first started Keto I ate a lot of low carb veggies. Now I eat much less than I did as a matter of personal preference. This worked and works for me, but that doesn't mean it is the only possible way to deal with diabetes. I would say cutting your carbs significantly is important. Whether you take to route of going low enough to enter nutritional ketosis is up to you. For me it has been beneficial in so many ways that I can't see going back. My basic opinion is any way of eating that gets you away from processed foods and cooking real food from whole ingredients is going to help.
