Help! My friend refuses to increase his calorie intake.

I've been fairly successful with my weight loss journey all thanks to MFP and the knowledge i learned from here and around the internet.
I was able to inspire some of my friends to take on Calorie counting as well but one friend in particular (who is fairly large 5'9 at 220lbs) believes that the less calories he takes, the more he is likely to lose weight. That basically means he nets 1200 or even less (due to exercise) everyday even tho his TDEE requires him to net at around 1600 cal.
Is there any really good articles out there that can help me convince him that having such low calorie intake is bad and if there are any studies that support the idea of starvation mode?

He's unlikely to go into starvation mode, but he could do serious damage in the long run. I grabbed a few articles which are short and to the point and hopefully can get the message across.
