Hello
I just started to follow my diet. I have been struggling a lot. I am over 60 years of age with an extremely slow, low metabolism. There are certain foods with soy that I cannot have. That's challenging! I want to lose 10 pounds by May. I am borderline diabetic and a breast cancer survivor. My body is sore...joints....back...degenerative disc disease. Sometimes I just grab what is available in my refrigerator due to feeling ill. I look forward to hearing from you and I hope you are doing well on this diet. Take good care

Hello, and welcome!
I joined here at 59, am 68 now (in year 8 of maintaining a healthy weight, after around 30 years of overweight/obesity and just under a year of loss). I'm a breast cancer survivor, too: Stage III, locally advanced, back in 2000.
Are you avoiding soy because of estrogen-fed breast cancer? If so, you might want to look at some of the more recent research. When I was diagnosed, there were cautions about soy, but more recent research suggests that consuming some is not dangerous. (Since I'm vegetarian, that was helpful news, for me.)
I don't know how much you have to lose in total, but I found that reaching a healthy weight reduced frequency and severity of joint pain (from arthritis, osteoporosis, some other knee issues). Quality of life is better at a healthy weight. I'm sure some of the improvement is from less pressure on my joints (carrying excess weight around), but suspect there's also a contribution from reduced systemic inflammation.
Ten pounds by May is quite an aggressive goal, if you're talking about the beginning of May . . . it may be achievable if starting out well over 200 pounds, but I'd suggest some caution. Cutting calories too aggressively can compromise immune system, and risk some bone/muscle depletion that could be avoided with a more moderate loss rate.
To lose 10 pounds in about a month would mean eating 1,125 calories daily fewer than you burn, on average. Especially if your metabolism is low and slow, that big a deficit may not be achievable healthfully and sustainably.
If it's 10 pounds over the course of both April and May, that may be more realistic.
Either way, wishing you success: The results are worth the effort, IME.2 -
Hello,
Thank you for responding to me. Next week I get a barium swallow test. I take 40 mg. of omeprazole every day before breakfast. I am constantly hungry throughout the day. The gastroenterologist might do an esophageal stretch. I had that done two years ago. I am just not feeling so good. I bought Ensure protein drink to try that. Hopefully things will get better with my diet.2
