Brand new, and already overwhelmed

I’ll be absolutely fine but if I’m not super communicative right off the bat it’s because I have so much information in my brain right now.

Hi, I am Jenn. You may know me from other online locations as JennTheGamerMom. I’m 55, way too big, a technical writer and McKinney Vento driver, and currently have two injured knees that inspired me to actually do something about the weight instead of just thinking about it and talking about it with my therapist. I’m a widowed mom of two, Abby who is 21 and studying for her theater education degree, and Lizzy who is 16 and a junior in high school.

For fun, I read, write, play video games, and sleep. 😂

    Hey Jenn,

    Don't let anything here overwhelm you. If you have questions ask, if you find solutions that work for you take note, if you get frustrated vent, and in most cases if you want a donut that is just fine as well.

    What things are overwhelming you, and why are you finding those things overwhelming?

    I’m okay, the overwhelm is just from a lot of new information and I haven’t processed it yet.

    I can tell that I am tired and a wee bit overwhelmed, because I miss categorized my younger daughter as a high school junior, and she is only a sophomore. Is there a way to edit one of these posts, lol

    Only for the first hour after posting. After that you need to contact a moderator and I think the only thing they can do is delete the post. Or move it to a different discussion thread. Or something. I’m not an expert on their powers.

    Anyway. Welcome to MFP.

    I’m disabled. I have a balance disorder, which complicates exercising. I use a NuStep. It’s much easier for a number of reasons. One is that it’s easier on the joints.

    You might want to consider getting something like it.

    Hey.... anyone that has kids in school can understand that mistake. Things happen!

    As for new information, take some of it with a grain of salt. What really matters for weight loss and control is energy balance. How you get to the point you are comfortable with often takes a bit of time to figure out. But you don't need "only diet X works", or 10,000 flutter kicks a day, or to do massive cardio sessions, or for that matter to work out at all if you don't want to or can't. The food you eat dictates the vast majority of weight loss and many health markers, so calories matter most.

    Over time you find what works best for you individually.

    Hi, I’m Sue. I used to work out in the gym and do a lot of hiking. I really enjoyed it, felt fit and happy with my body. Then a few years ago I started having hip pain and over time it hurt too much to pretty much anything and I put on weight. Covid hit and it all got worse. A few months ago I had my hip replacement surgery and am slowly working my way back to fitness. I have 40 pounds to loose. I found out about chair aerobics before my surgery and it helped me loose a little bit of weight to in anticipation of the surgery. I highly recommend it to anyone that has knee or hip problems. You can find many free classes on YouTube. Try one..it could be a first step towards a new fitness level for you.

    I have subscribed to several YouTube channels that are about modified yoga, or modified Pilates for people who are elderly or obese, or disabled, or some combination of the above. I had been using those already, but apparently it was not enough. And I just now got serious, I guess; blowing out that second knee was scary enough that I needed to do something about it instead of just thinking and talking about it.

    So, as one does, I wrote a blog post and posted it on my Facebook page, and got lots and lots of advice. MyFitnessPal appears to be easily connected with most of these other tools, so it sounded like a good place to start.
