Unsure!

I am totally unsure about this app. I have dietary needs and apparently the app only is mainstream. I take pictures of my food but it still asks me to identify each food!! I do weight training that requires that I eat small but often. I have the premium version but I might well cancel.

Not entirely sure what you want the rest of us (users of the app) to say? Go ahead and cancel if you don’t like MFP, OR ask some questions if you want help or pointers.

By the way, I weightlift and I eat little and often - I’m not sure what you think is wrong with the app for that?

First of all, if you think premium doesn't add anything then cancel it. No need to use it.

Identifying food based on a photo is not something that reliably works yet. Plus the database is largely user sourced. You can find ANYTHING but it also means you get rubbish entries as well. Thus you need to chose the entry that fits your produce or product.

Several meals per day are not problem. Either add more categories (not sure this works on the app, but it does on the website). Or stick with the existing categories and add more than one small meal to one. You can also rename them.

If you have any specific questions then please ask. We're all users, but willing to help.

You can also add meals to the default ones, I think up to 6 meals total, in either web MFP or phone/tablet app. And (re-)name all of them anything you want.

But sure, if the app doesn't work for you, OP, that's a possible reason to quit it.

I kinda figure that if some tool doesn't exactly fit my needs, yet I can use it fairly easily in some maybe-nonstandard way to reach my goals, then I'm winning. And personally - as a somewhat IT-savvy gal after a long career in the field - I think trusting an app to analyze photos and estimate calories . . . well, I think that technology is still pretty half-baked at this point, if even that mature.

Maybe the perfect app for you is out there, and you can find it, though. That would be great - sincerely.

P.S. If you want to suggest something to MFP to improve the software, you can do that here:

I have dietary needs that are different from mainstream.

Very low sodium. Gluten free. Diabetes compliant. And a calorie restriction lower than normal because of disability and reduced mobility.

I pay for premium and I am very happy with it. I have 6 meals in my diary. I don’t always eat 6, but I appreciate having the option.

And I love that I can name the meals things like “elevensies” and “yet another snack!”

YMMV but I advise you to stick with it for a couple weeks at least. Try the things @AnnPT77 suggested.

Set a reminder in your calendar app to pop up and remind you a day or two before your free trial runs out. But before then, spend time learning about MFP. Then you can make an informed choice based on knowledge and your own personal needs.

”Senior” female, weight train, and myriad other activities.

I eat often, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. You could say I’m on a “special diet”. It’s a darn sight more special than it was a person-and-a-half ago.

    Familiarity is the key.

Invest in learning the app, same as you’ve invested in learning proper lifting form.

Half-arsed lifting leads to injuries. Half arsed logging leads to poor results.

It’s not a magic app. Your ID indicates you’re a doctor. Would you take a single photo of a condition and expect a device to diagnose it instantly? I hope note. Why in the world would you expect better from an app that costs an infinitesimal fraction of a piece of medical diagnostic equipment?

If you’ll enter some of your foods, you’ll find they come up quickly the next time you go to enter them, and will also suggest foods that usually accompany the first. Makes logging a snap.

I don't know what you mean by saying the app is only mainstream. There are vegans, keto-ists, "clean" eaters, pure carnivores, IF-ers, and people following dietary approaches I've probably never heard of all using the app.

You can adjust goals for various macro and micro nutrients to whatever you choose.

You can enter the foods you eat, no matter how non-stream, although you may have to occasionally create a database entry if you're eating something so not mainstream that none of the millions of other MFP users have created an entry for it.

It's very flexible. Could you explain how it's not working for your non-mainstream diet?
