Weights/dumbbells and awkward to hold

Hi,
I thought I'd start again with JM's 30 day fitness. Used to have the normal rubber type dumbbells but purchased this weight set from decathlon for the price and being able to adjust.

The thing is even with the basic amount - just two 1kg weights and 1.6kg bar it comes to almost 5kg on each and even though bar is short, it's still too long.
What sort of level do I move onto these weights for or what sort of exercise?
I feel good using dumbbells as it makes a difference when exercising.

As you can tell I'm beginner level. Did 30 day shred before though.

Since they are metal I'm assuming that the bars weigh 1kg by themselves. Rule of thumb is you use whatever resistance the you can for a set amount of reps to completion with moderate effort. For instance if you're doing a dumbbell curl for 10 reps, the last rep or two should be somewhat difficult to complete.

You can just use the bar if that is the level you are able to work at. You don't have to add plates to it until you are able to handle them.
