I don't mostly think of it that way. Mostly, I just focus on all-day overall nutrition and managing all-day appetite. If I were hungry after a workout, I'd eat something small, leaning toward quick carbs (even sugar) if low energy, protein if the workout had been challenging muscularly. Otherwise, I'd wait until the next meal.

The one exception has been time period when I had back-to-back group classes (or other gym activities). The most common scenario like that was a spin class followed by something like kettlebell or a strength workout, each of those 45 minutes to an hour long. I found I did better (energy-wise and recovery) if I had a snack in the brief break between activities. Sometimes it was one of those little cartons of shelf-stable milk (chocolate is especially good), or just a no-sugar applesauce packet. Maybe it's partly placebo effect, but it felt like even a small snack made a difference.

Usually I have a large skim latte after on-water rowing, but that's more social than anything else, since multiple people from our rowing group usually go to the coffee shop together. I did find for a while that I wanted a banana with my coffee, but that became less important to me when I slightly increased carbs in my pre-rowing breakfast (which is current crunchy peanut butter on an Ezekial pita, plus a cup of nonfat plain kefir).

Hydration during/after workouts is important for me, but I seem to be especially hydration sensitive in general. (I do sweat copiously, even in mild workouts!)

That's a slippery slope for me.
If I'm lifting weights, I may have a protein drink if anything. If I'm doing cardio, I wont snack.
