Fighting for that energy in mid 40’s

Hello y’all-
New to this program. Started here after following Kristy Castillo, who swears by counting macros and eating a higher level of proteins is the most sustainable way of fueling your body and maintaining better health and motivation. Had the healthiest most fit year of my life at 40, felt the best I ever had, struggle with some bowel health issues as well as over indulging in alcohol at times. Which of course has given me quite the roller coaster ride since as you can imagine. New to this idea… but like having more diet control with my health problems. Any thoughts? Anyone else follow her and see results with this theory?
Thank you

    Welcome, Shanon!

Not familiar with her, but as somebody who's in the best shape of my life at age 47 I can assure you that it IS possible for us! lol I track daily calories and make sure my protein intake is high enough, but beyond that I don't restrict eating based upon macros. This can result in large swings of high fat/low carbs one day, low fat/high carbs another, but that's what happens when I eat a variety of meals rather than the same thing every day like I used to do.

    Hi, Shannon, and welcome!

I'm not a Kathy Castillo follower, but do share the view that good overall nutrition (including ample protein) is important, especially so as we age. (I'm way older than you, at 68, but also active.) I strive for balanced nutrition routinely.

I don't know what bowel issues you've had, but for me with some concerns in that area, it's been helpful to not only get enough fiber (of varied types), but also adequate fats, good hydration, and some probiotic foods (like live culture yogurt/kefir, raw sauerkraut/kim chi, live culture miso, raw vinegar, etc.), plus routine enjoyable exercise.

Obviously, alcohol consumption can also have negative effects in that area. If working on that is a priority for you, there's an active thread here where interested MFP-ers support each other with that goal. The thread reincarnates new each month. Here's the current one:

Best wishes for success with all your goals!
