hols - whats min exersise to maintain fitness?

I've just upped my training (added running) to get fitter for a 6m assault course on 20th oct. I know I could do it now easily enough - but when I do things I like to put my all into them :)

So current exersise -

Run 3x week - 4miles
Metafit 2x week
Rebound class 1x week
Ride horse 6x week (for competition fitness so think 5mins canter work x3 - it's a leg killer too ;))
Horse daily chores (30mins pushing wheel barrow loads of poo up hill out of field - delightful lol)

So I'm off for 12 days on hols and will take my trainers with me but I do also want a bit of a break - what would be my minimum level of work I'd need to do to maintain my fitness?

Or of that a 'how long is a price of string? ' question?

Alternatively - how much fitness would a normally very active person lose of they did very little for 12 days?

I will hopefully be swimming quite a bit in the sea

oh and does temp change intensity of workouts? 13'C here - 32'C where I'm going

To maintain your current fitness level, you would need to match the training you are doing at the moment.

Reduce your training or stop it altogether and gradually your fitness level reduces.

However, if you say, stopped training for a couple of weeks, when it came to you resuming, although the first session may be a bit uncomfortable, the second training session will be easier and by the third you will be back where you were.

You never lose ALL of your fitness, not unless you were to put on a ton of weight and sit around munching chips all day long, this would not apply in your case I am absolutely sure!

Heat will interfere with some activities, if you are used to running in 13 deg., suddenly trying to run in 30+ deg. will drain you a bit until you become acclimatized to it. I had similar, running at home in 6 degrees in the winter, went to the Canary Islands and suddenly was running in 28 degrees two days later - I adored it, but it was hard at first.

One little tip re running in the heat, when you have finished your run, stand under a lukewarm shower, cool your head down - I did this and it was invaluable, sometimes the heat can force your core temperature up, make sure you keep hydrated (then I dived in the pool and did my lengths lol - I must have appeared like a right nutter with all the activity  )

    Thank you :)

they say horses don't lose any fitness in two weeks - so it's interesting that humans lose quicker - I do have someone riding her though as I have Scottish xc championships a week after I'm back so want us both on top form for that :)

I wake early anyway - and husband likes a lie in whereas i get bored lol - so I tend to work out first thing - so I think I'll do that when it is cooler too - and I'll prob finish with a swim in the pool then meet him for breakfast (I also normally run/workout and ride/do horse cores before breakfast so used to doing it all on empty stomach)

Yes I suspect I'll look like a complete nutter lol but used to that ;)

LOL that is exactly how I did all mine too! I will say this for doing all exercise first thing, it set me up completely for the rest of the day and if I wanted to drink around the pool later on, it was fine because I didn't have my run to do later on in the day as I had already done it.

    Have a great holiday! :drinker:

it's just 12 days. enjoy your vacation. if you want to run a few times, or every day, go ahead. but if you want to relax, nobody loses all their gains in two weeks. take your shoes, have a couple workout plans, and do them if you feel like it. or don't. nothing wrong with taking a break.
