Y'know, I think confidence in the process will grow the longer a person sticks with it.
It's easier to stick with it by shooting for a sensibly moderate weight loss rate (not super fast), sticking with foods a person enjoys eating (in appropriate portions), and adding fun ways of moving more (if they want to increase exercise). Misery is optional, and makes the process harder to continue long enough to lose a meaningful total amount of weight.
