Dropped about 9lbs in 2 weeks! Is this normal?

Hi Everyone!
46 year old guy, 6ft. About 2 weeks ago, I was 208-209lbs. I decided I need to get in better shape mostly because I’ve got my annual physical coming up and last year my numbers weren’t very great. Prediabetic, elevated BP, elevated A1C, elevated Cholesterol and Glucose. The whole nine yards. I started a reduced calorie and low carb diet and I’ve been dropping weight rapidly. 2 weeks in and I’ve lost 8-9lbs! Also had high anxiety and stress the past 2 weeks so I’m sure that’s contributed to the rapid weight loss. That’s great but also makes me a bit concerned considering how fast I’ve lost the weight. I know it’s probably water weight and maybe some fat but mostly trying to find out if this rapid drop is normal and when it might slow down.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Do you know what your calorie input is now compared to before you started?

Have you started lifting or doing high intensity cardio?

Yeah, probably several pounds of that was water. It's why I recommend not counting the first week when you look to track your weekly loss rate, since that will skew the result.

Not exactly sure what it was at before but probably around 2000 calories. I think I’m at 1400-1700 now.

No I haven’t started lifting or cardio but planning to soon. Just doing mild walking.

I’m just cautiously optimistic with this rapid loss but also slightly concerned how fast I dropped the weight. I guess it is normal after all. I was expecting more of a gradual loss. I think I’ll keep this going until I hit my goal weight and then slowly start ramping up the carbs again so I maintain the weight.

Water weight loss is normal when going low carb, it should level off the coming weeks. If after two weeks it's still going down that quickly, I would reassess.

PS 1400-1700 is low for a 6ft man. Heck, I ate more than that as a 5ft4 woman losing weight 🙂But then again, 2000kcal also sounds low for you for maintaining 200+ lbs, so you might be undercounting your intake.

That's a good point. OP was probably more around 2500kc per day. If the new estimate of 1500kc is accurate, that's 2 pounds per week. Plus several pounds of water weight, that all adds up.

Yes, I’m sure I’m off a bit with my counts. I try to track as best as I can. Breakfast and lunches are easier because most of the food is packaged. Dinner is home made so much harder to estimate.

I’m glad to hear this rapid loss is expected. Definitely alarming as I was expecting a more gradual decline. According to my doctor, I need to be in the low to mid 190s.
