Supplements?

I want to find a really good supplement to help with boosting my weight loss and speed up muscle growth? I'm not an expert on any type of supplement but I'm betting someone on here is. Thanks for the help in advance :)

Supplements are seriously like 5% of the battle. Diet and exercise will get your miles further.
  • Well I'm doing pretty well with diet and I will be starting weight training in the next couple days so I'm looking to add to it all. I just need advice on what would be good. Opinions appreciated but I'm looking for actual products that people have tried. Thanks

^ This. There's no magic to weight loss and muscle growth. Sure supplements help, but nothing will be "fast". It's going to take hard work, sweat and sometimes blood.

Just ask any of the successful people here.

With that said, I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey protein (when I'm below my macro), and use Scivation Xtend as an intraworkout supplement.

Other than daily vitamins and protein powder to add protein to the diet, supplements are a waste of money.

Oh lord. I understand it takes time and hard work! I'm looking for that extra help and push. I don't know how else to put it. Aha gosh guys. If noone has a helpful website or names to products just ignore this post. Thanks a bunch :)

I usually take my daily multivitamin, as well as joint soother (Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement) and fish oil for my joints.

I've found that the joint soother and fish oil REALLY help with bringing down joint pain and swelling. I've noticed a major difference not taking them and some of the swelling has come back which is why I ran to Vitamin Shoppe over the weekend to grab some more. Might be something you want to look into to keep your joints lubricated, especially if you'll be doing loads of heavy lifting.

Edit: (I've already been to the physical therapist for it, for any that are considering throwing the "don't use supplements to make up for going to the doctor" card. Most of the pain came from being overweight and weak leg muscles and is slowly fixing itself as I work out, but the supplements have really helped the process along).

Note, I'm not a doctor, but I've noticed an actual difference in my personal experience.

All the good **** is illegal :)

except ephedrine..you can still get ephedrine.

Surprised no one mentioned caffeine or creatine?

If you were to take supplements, start with protein. If you were to continue on, take creatine to increase size. and if you wanna blow up your workout, take a pre-workout.
    Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein
    Promera Sports Con-Cret (creatine)
    Cellucor c4 (pre-workout)
  • Diet is key no supplement will do it on its own. That being said I take Whey Protein *Hardcore Series Precision Engineered - Whey Protein Isolate (Chocolate Naturally Flavored) Protein Powder* and in the morning with it I take Omega 3 Fish Oil Triple Strength and Creatine Tablets after work out.

Agree, 5% is even high-balling it I think. Focus on things that help you recover from hard workouts and even that doesn't really require supplements.

The only supplements that are worth it are illegal and/or dangerous. Don't waste your time and money.

there is no such thing as extra help or push. there is nothing a supp can do that food cannot already do. supps are for convince to fill in gaps that food cannot easily cover. there are NOT for getting 'extra help and push".

that said, the common ones are protein, creatine, multivitamin and fish oil. none of which are needed as you can get RDA of all 4 with proper diet. but taking these makes your diet FAR less restrictive so it's worth it to get them in supp form.

My husband goes to a personal trainer and the only thing that he was given was a meal plan, and protein powder. He has put on a noticeable amount of muscle and dropped from like 20% body fat to 15%. And he is still dropping that. So... that being said- watch your diet, exercise, and if you want to add supplements, go with protein powder. Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water with the high protein...

The one thing I'll say about creatine is that you would probably have to eat far too much red meat to get that much creatine; creatine is probably one of the few exceptions to the rule.

The only thing i have to offer or add is BCAAs

I take a scoop prework out and a scoop post workout. I have noticed it helps quite a bit with my lifting endurance and recovery big time.

Also PLENTY of protein. If you are just looking for a quick fad or fix to get the ball rolling then you might end up putting it back on. Rely mostly on healthy , nutritious foods and watch the processed stuff.

BCAAs, protein supplements, and creatine do have merits...I couldn't take BCAAs though...they taste unbelievably terrible, and I decided life was too short because I was dreading them so badly every day.

But all those "fat-loss, muscle-building" miracle pills that are advertised in magazines are garbage designed to drain your wallet, IMO. If any of them actually worked, Oprah would be ripped.

I agree 100 % on the fat burning pills etc you mention. Big waste of money.

As far as the BCAAs , the one i use is a powder that tastes like watermelon ( there are other flavors) and i mix it with 8 oz of water. tastes like flavored water....great taste actually.

I got mine from Total Nutrition Store. It is called Nutracore Nutrition....Aminocore 100% instantized BCAA Watermelon flavor. It costs like $50.00 for 45 workouts but sometimes i just do 1 scoop instead of two. There are also other flavors

I work out at 5AM and some mornings, I have a tough time getting going - I take a pre-workout drink called Lit-Up (Applied Nutriceutials) peach tea flavor, and BCAAs during my workout - Gaspari Nutrition Aminolast - I like Watermelon, Lemon Ice and Orange Mango flavors, and after my workout I do protein (Eat the Bear any flavor or PlantFusion, any of the chocolates, I switch between the 2). I take CLA, D3, Fish Oil and Creatine as recommended by my doc because there have been studies that indicate they can help with either joints, calcium absorption heart health, or maintaining or improving muscle and strength. I take glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM supplement for joints too but I honestly don't think it does much good for me. I know others it's worked wonders for.
