I am new to my fitness pal.

I am trying this. I need (I have to) get this weight off. I have not stuck with things in the past so I have to make this work. I am very overweight and out of shape. Not sure where to begin but I have to figure this out.

Hi, you are not alone. I have to get this weight off too, to be healthier and have a better experience in life. Take it one day and time and one decision at a time. That's how I'm going to approach this for the rest of my life. 1 choice, 1 meal, 1 day at a time. Feel free to reach out for support, we all want to be better versions of ourselves for ourselves. Be kind to yourself.

    Hello, and welcome!

My advice: Don't make it any harder than it needs to be.

Too many people show up here with plans to dramatically change their eating style (maybe via some restrictive, trendy named diet), and stack intense daily exercise on top of that. They don't seem to last long. I can only hope that they went on to succeed long term, but honestly I have my doubts. (There are too many "I'm back" posts in the Introductions section to let me believe that.)

It can work fine to make manageable positive changes, and do it gradually. Look for new, somewhat better habits you can integrated into your routine lifestyle, and build on those with more changes once they've become habit.

Maybe log your food, just what you eat now. Observe things that don't seem worth their calorie "cost" for tastiness or nutrition. Those are easy things to reduce (portions or frequency) or even eliminate (if you won't feel deprived). Think about moving just a little bit more in your routine day: Maybe walk a couple of extra aisles in the supermarket, go for a short walk on lunch hour, park further out in the parking lot, take the stairs sometimes, etc. Small things add up, and can be a foundation for more, as long as you keep going, keep tweaking those old habits and practicing new ones.

Weight loss (or fitness improvement) doesn't need to be brutal. There will be challenges, but there's no reason to make them any bigger than necessary. Being overweight isn't a sin we need to expiate by suffering, or a melodrama about good and evil. You can do this.

    Best wishes!
