Don’t forget to count calories used in cooking process

Recently dawned on me to start guessing how much oil is used in cooking foods. I ordered a Denny’s Fit Slam and when I finished the plate was coated in oil. I
Guessed they used a couple tablespoons of oil so the eggs wouldn’t stick. Same goes for the taco truck tacos… they add oil to the grill then cook the tortillas and shrimp and veggies. The oils really add up! I’ve been such a stickler for logging my foods and calories…now I round up whenever I’m not sure. Too obsessive?

    Nope. Just mindful.

I usually add a tbsp of cooking oil to my diary on GP when I eat out, unless I’ve specifically ordered something that wouldn’t be cooked with oil.

It’s always better to overestimate than under, I figure.

The way I look at it, though, paying attention to what goes in my mouth is still worlds of improvement versus what I used to do.
  • Good idea….I’m going to start asking not to use too much oil when cooking. Does the waitress look at you like you have a third eyeball? I’ve watched egg white omelette being made and by the time they are done cooking the veggies and finally the omelette they’ve used almost 4 tablespoons of fat!! It’s really discouraging to eat out when you cannot believe the nutritional values posted.

At a restaurant I typically Google the menu ahead so I can order a food that wouldn’t be cooked with oil.

But when eating things I have no choice about, like while traveling recently, where meals were preordered by our guide and plates handed round, I added oil then.

I’ve found restaurants to be fairly accommodating if I take the time to ask.

We’ve got an international visitor right now who has taken a yen to try one of those performance hibachi restaurants. I have this mental visual of the hibachi chef dousing everything with oil and am trying to figure that one out. 😫

but if the oil is on your plate and on their skillet, its not in your food. I understand some of it makes it into the food and should be counted but how much really?

This is a good question, and why I opt to be conservative in my estimates! It definitely needs to be counted, but it's one of those things where you can only make best guess.
  • I think a taco would absorb all the grease and then the meat and veggies are scooped up off the grill… grease and all into your taco.
I think the Fit Slam breakfast I ate did not account for the oil used in cooking or the whipped butter I added to the English muffin. I didn’t even finish my plate but calculated I had 628 calories for breakfast counting coffee! A far cry from the 400 or so listed on the menu. An eye opener for sure. I’m going to add at least 200 calories to grilled food that I eat out.
