New Week's Resolution - Week 1

Welcome to the first week of the rest of your life! Now seems like a perfect time to select a New Week's Resolution.

What is a New Week's Resolution? It's exactly the same as a New Year's Resolution, with two important distinctions: it only lasts for one week, and you can start one any time you want, rather than just once per year.

So what's wrong with New Year's Resolutions? According to some quick Google research, just one thing: they DON'T WORK!
  • 23% of people quit within the first week
  • 43% quit by the end of January
  • 80% quit by mid-February
  • 92% fail to make it a full year
Why such high rates of failure? Probably because most resolutions fail to follow these simple steps from the SMART method:
  • Specific - "exercise more" is vague; "hit the gym twice this week" is specific
  • Measurable - did I go twice? Yes or no?
  • Achievable - "drink a gallon of water per day" may not be realistic; drink 8oz is
  • Relevant - if it doesn't matter to YOU, why bother?
  • Time-bound - keep your goal for this week something quick you can reach THIS week
With these thoughts in mind, what is ONE thing you want to do this week? Some examples may include:
  • Hit the gym two times this week
  • Cook a meal from scratch three times this week
  • Go to bed no later than 10pm every night
  • Limit myself to one alcoholic beverage this week
  • Finish two pages of my family photo album
...and so on. While this is very similar in nature to the famous "Just Give Me 10 Days" series, that challenge focuses primarily on weight loss and diet control, whereas this challenge is of a broader nature, including interpersonal relationships, home improvements, health and fitness and more. Just pick something specific you wish to focus upon, set a number goal you can reach (or not), and make status updates to document your progress. This will be a judgment-free zone: if you do not reach your goal, take the time to figure out why not (too big a goal, life happened, etc), and forgive yourself, because you can always try again next week.

    My goal for this week:

I will floss every night before bed.

Note that I am very diligent about brushing my teeth, but regrettably I very rarely floss, usually only on nights I can feel something stuck between my teeth (like nights I eat corn on the cob). I have the little floss-sticks, I just have not used them. This week, I will.

I will work on my linkedin courses at least one hour per day and my etsy shop for an hour to make make up for the hours that I quit sitting on my butt at my sedentary job when I switched to part- time!

I am focused on healthier overall days, including ongoing eat regular meals and not in-between. This week are 2 new efforts; reduce screen time (deleted some time wasters) and establishing a better sleep routine especially in bed and lights out on time or before. Day 1 sleep routine starts tonight ;)

    Tuesday - check!

Probably TMI, but the first time I flossed on Sunday, my gums turned into a sea of blood, bleh! But last night, not a drop. Not sure yet how much of the improvement is based upon better technique, and how much from the gums deciding this new activity was actually a good thing...

I will work on my linkedin courses...

I thought LinkedIn was strictly a job-hunting site, I was unaware it had courses you can take.

Check, but... took awhile to wind down and sleep. Tonight, I think i might do a little soft music and gentle movement/stretching to relax an hour or so before desired lights out

1\2✔️ I didn't do the courses over the weekend, but did on the days I would have normally been working full-time. I didn't work on Etsy/art as much as I would have liked, though...

    Check, adding affirmation to strategy.

A friend shared in a group the following comment:

if I listen to a positive affirmation before bed, I fall asleep quickly. Especially when we get to the part that says, “I can relax because I deserve rest.”

My thought - love that... and isn't that an affirmation we can apply to all our choices and self-care? Snaggled it to try tonight.

    Sunday - check!

End of week results: successful check all 7 days! Seriously don't know why I resisted doing this for so many years, it literally only takes under a minute to complete, and after that first uncomfortable day the rest were simply no big deal.

Week 2 is now available if anybody wants to jump in, either continuing to focus upon the same resolution from this week, or adding a new focus.
