Losing muscle mass

I don't know if this is the right section to post this in, but I was wondering if anyone knew how quickly you can lose muscle mass when you haven't worked those muscle groups.

I am trying to lose fat as well as gain muscle at the same time, but I have been dropping pounds quite quickly these last few weeks. I hope that it isn't because I haven't done much strength training, and that it's not muscle mass that I am actually losing.

Any insight to this would be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

I'm not sure about the rate at which someone might lose muscle, but the larger your calorie deficit, the more likely you are to lose more lean body mass. If your goal is to lose fat and gain muscle, you're better off lifting weights while eating at a very small deficit or at maintenance.

I'm curious about this too as I can go weeks without losing weight or inches while I'm working out but then if I take a week or two off the pounds seem to fall off and so do the inches

Muscles retain water, so you probably rest, let them recover fully and thus less weight, inches.

Ahhh so its probably just the retained water being lost then, thanks. I'm still trying to get to grips with all the science stuff :)
