Question about drinking wine

I am trying to lose weight and while I am under my calorie goal and exercise, I enjoy a glass of red wine or moscato in the evenings. I am losing a lot slower than I think I should be. Should I give up wine while I am trying to lose? Can wine fit into a diet? Thanks!

I live in wine country and love wine, so no never giving it up. It's an integral part of my life and my food culture that can't be seperated.

In my case when I have a glass of wine or two, I seem to lose my motivation to eat a salad...so the appetizers come out and bazinga, there goes my diet. When I cut out the drinks, I seem to do a lot better. Just sayin!
  • Wine CAN fit into a weight loss plan- just watch your sugar intake throughout the day like a hawk (and the calories count too). If I'm correct in my thinking- blushes, moscatos and chardonnays have a higher sugar count than reds do so maybe check that out?

If you aren't losing much, or any weight it's probably more than just the one glass of wine coming in to play. Too many calories, too much sugar, too little water, not enough sleep...all those things affect weight loss so take a look at the bigger picture.

FYI- I'm in recovery so no longer drink wine (dang!) but I still manage to find the sugar in frozen yogurt (dang again!). I find when I really watch sugars and those other things I mentioned above my scale will start moving in the right direction. :)

One final thought- ramp up cardio and add strength training to boost metabolism and fat burning. (Though you may already be doing this!) Good luck.. and enjoy that glass of wine!
  • Oh- I just re-read your entry re: calories and exercise. If your gut is telling you to cut the wine, then cut the wine. Make sure the calories you are getting are the good ones (think protein and whole grains) and that you are eating an adequate amount. Eating too few calories stalls weight loss and sends your body into famine mode. Your body will grab and store everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that goes into your mouth. Losing weight can be slow and hard but anyone CAN do it!

I cut out the alcohol during my steady losing phase, but slowly added it back in after I reached my "goal" :-)

More strength training will boost your metabolism. I wouldn't cut out the wine!

    Cheers!

If it fits into your day, drink the wine and enjoy it.

2nd. If the rest of your diet's helping you, & you feel good, keep it in (maybe stick to 1 glass with dinner) - this is for the long haul.

I save it for special occasions while I'm eating at a deficit.

Just make sure you can fit it into your day. I would also suggest measuring it out to make sure you are accounting accurately. My wine glasses hold 8 oz so one glass is really two per the serving size...

Why not try cutting it out for a little while and seeing if your weight loss picks up a little bit? Certainly wouldn't hurt to try. I feel the same way about having a nice tasty ice cold beer, but when I do indulge I tend to go up a pound or two and it takes about 2-3 days to get that back off. Not saying that happens to everybody, but that's what happens to me every time. Also don't know if this is true or not, but I've read that when you have alcohol in your system your liver will divert energy from metabolizing fat (mainly the fat you've consumed with your food that day) and focus on breaking down the alcohols. Supposedly this cycle can take between 12-24 hours before your liver gets back to working on fats. Might be something to look into further if you're losing slower than you expect.

I drink regularly and do find that in times where I don't drink my weightloss is more significant.

When I first started here I cut it out completely and lost a lot of weight with diet and exercise. Started adding it back in and now I'm too quick to reach for a drink when I need to fill extra calories. My weightloss is very slow, if at all even if I'm at deficit or maintainence. I constantly fluctuate the same 2-5lbs as a direct cause of drinking alcohol.

I'm cutting it out again starting tomorrow! I'm sticking to special occasions!
