In the past using the "log my meals in MFP" method I've lost weight . I always stop daily logging, and those periods track with regaining weight. A lesson I'm seeing is I might need to take on the endless lifetime practice of being careful with what I eat. I've resisted that idea, because it seems hard. The only way I found "to be careful with what I eat" is to log my meals. From birth to age 40 I had the additional option of just exercising more. That is no longer a stand alone option.
To be careful with what I eat and daily log all of my meals, I need to figure out how to happily take that burden on and change my relationship to that. My thinking has to change from "an unsustainable burden" to a commitment to "a small daily practice that will drastically improve my health and the quality of my life."
Many of you superstars know what I'm talking about and have figured it out for yourself. I appreciated being here amongst you. It's inspiring.8 -

Yep, right there with you! I did okay thru Covid as I was able to keep my exercise routine (well, running anyway). But then I got tired of logging and I was okay giving myself a grace of 10 lbs, but then that turned into 15 and then 20 and I was like, WTH?!?! lol. I felt like a couple years ago, my metabolism was at a point where I could outrun a bad diet, but that certainly isn't true for me now!6 -
Glad your run felt good @martaindale .
@ContraryMaryMary I'm glad you are getting back into the routine this week. I hope the HM goes well.
You did great @WarmJellyfish . Those temp swings are hard to deal with.
Thanks for setting up Feb @AlphaHowls ! It's hard to believe that Jan is almost over already. Glad you were able to get out for your run today.
@chris_in_cal I'm right there with you. Even though I don't obsess about keeping under my goal, I have found if I log my food, it makes me think more about what I am putting in my mouth and I do a lot better. So, I just know if I want to lose/maintain, I have to log and run. So I do.
@rusgolden There is a saying that "You can't outrun your fork." I totally agree.

I went to check out the new gym today, thinking I was going to get a workout, but wound up just signing up for 3 months of 3 x week of personal training sessions. It's a bit more expensive than I was hoping, so I probably won't continue the personal training after the 3 months. I'll see. Maybe I can just cut it down to one to maintain or something if I like it.
Anyway, I think that put me in a mood, so when I got home, I did NOT want to run. I did talk myself into a wun, which requires less energy. I did most of the wun for 2/2 min at 4.2/4.0 mph. Avg pace was 14:50 min/mile. Avg HR was 118 with a max of 140 bpm. That's a bit high for the energy I was expending. Plus, I got a stitch in my side! I haven't had one of those in years! So odd. I guess it's good that I didn't try to do more.
First gym session is tomorrow morning.7 -
@rusgolden @quilteryoyo I did find a way to outrun a bad diet/fork but it's definitely not recommended.
It involves days of really high caloric expenditure, such as 5-8 hour days of backpacking covering miles and miles and miles over hilly/mountain terrain for week or two. Or do a week long non-stop army infantry exercise with no sleep. Throw in a really bad diet aka no nutrition/lack of nutrition/insufficient calories+junk food etc. lol
But I always remember this technique whenever I need to kickstart my diet plan. Again. and Again....5 -
@WarmJellyfish You are right, that does not sound fun!
@ContraryMaryMary I hope next month is better for you and your leg problem is gone! Plus, kids back in school is always a bit less stressful for exercise.
@AlphaHowls Thanks for setting February up! I hope your feet are feeling better after the lower mileage and that you are able to get outside more for your runs!!!1 -
I was quite stiff this morning, but after the first km my legs seemed to loosen up a bit. I ran 10.5km, and, although I felt slower, it was at the same pace as my king run yesterday. Tomorrow I a supposed to do a tempo workout. I’m hoping to have recovered enough by then to hold the pace.
To those who asked about my phone- even though it landed on gravel/mud and was stomped on there were only a couple of small cracks to the screen cover! So no big deal this time .
Tomorrow I will reach my goal, which I am quite happy about. It was a lot more work than I thought it would be as I had so many days of no running.
275/280km for January.6 -
@Laurz9191 glad that your phone is ok
@quilteryoyo are you enjoying the sessions with the personal trainer? Is it still quiet at your new gym?
@AlphaHowls thanks for setting up February
Steady state run from my Garmin plan today, 8km in just under 1h (2 km easy run, 4 km faster, 2 km easy run) I did a knee warm up before going out and my knee was much better, only getting tight in the last kilometre or so maybe I need to think about proper warm up before running
4/1 5.1km parkrun (6.54/km pace)
6/1 1.4km benchmark run
8/1 6.5km easy run (7:51/km pace)
12/1 6.45km time trial run (7:20/km pace)
13/1 5.54km tempo run (7:32/km pace)
15/1 6.47km steady state run (7:12/km pace)
17/1 5km easy run (7:53/km pace)
24/1 5km easy run (7:50/km pace)
27/1 5.67km tempo run (7.35/km pace)
29/1 8.1km steady state run (7:18/km pace)

It was almost perfect running weather this morning at 53°F. It was pretty humid and a little misty at the end, but otherwise perfect. I was able to wear shorts and a t-shirt again. I really hate having to layer. I ran another 7 mile run. It was lovely. I felt great and honestly could have run more if I didn't have to go to work. I also saw about 5-6 deer at the park. It was still dark and they were running between some trees and the skateboard park, so I couldn't count them.
I am almost to my goal for this month. I knew it would be close. I should be able to get 10 miles run in the next two days. I guess we will see.

@WarmJellyfish I guess you are right, in the short run. But, it's like the tortoise and the hare and eventually, that darn fork will catch up and pass the hare while it is resting from all of that exercise.
@Laurz9191 Glad your legs loosened up and that your phone only sustained minor injuries.
Glad the warmup helped your knee @Emilienewme . My first session with the trainer is tomorrow morning. There was music at the gym today, anyway, but didn't seem like a lot of socializing was going on though.
@Mari33a That doesn't sound like fun at all!
Glad you had such a great run @kgirlhart .
Nice running @chris_in_cal .

Whoops, undone by ice cream today. Not majorly, but it was a good reminder to check how many calories I have left before I indulge.
On the upside, I did make it to Pilates today.7 -
I just went outside with the skipping rope for 15 minutes to burn 100 or so calories. I was thinking it’s dumb to go over on my second day of trying to be good but I couldn’t go for a run because my husband is out so there’s no one to look after the girls. But then I thought skipping will do the job and it is also excellent rehab rehabilitation for my calf muscle. And according to an excellent running coach I follow on Instagram, us older runners, and in fact all runners, should be using the skipping rope regularly as part of our training plan.9
-
@ContraryMaryMary 15 minutes of jump rope sounds like a hard workout to me!!!
@kgirlhart That sounds like a great run!
@chris_in_cal Great to see you back in action!
I decided to do my tempo workout at the gym today. It was hard, but I got through it successfully. I was planning on weight training afterwards, but my body was like, NO, so I did some stretching, mobility strength work.
I ran 15km today, so that I will reach 300km for the month if I run an easy 10km tomorrow .
290/280km for January.5 -
Morning all
Got in 5.0M at 09"24.
Had a bundle of energy this morning. From where - I don't know! Realised I ran the first five minutes at < 08"30 speed, so I thought I'd continue and run first mile at that pace.
Old Tarun woulda continued and tried to run 10K in 50 or something... But thought 'no', 'baby steps', 'injury' etc etc. so after banking that mile, I'd take it easy for the remainder.
Then, about a mile or so from home, saw that work emails were pinging so needed to hurry back. So thought I'd run last mile like I did first.
So fingers crossed 🤞🏽 all ok tomorrow!
Will definitely run tomorrow's run at a comfy pace.
@ContraryMaryMary ooohh what flavour ice-cream? Hope it was something good and worthwhile that undid all the good work!
PS:
Favourite ice-cream:
Haagen Dasz Praline Cream!!
(with a good quality Pistachio gelato or Pistachio kulfi second!).8 -
@ContraryMaryMary Way to figure out how to burn some calories. Jumping rope is hard.
You're doing great @Laurz9191 .
Fingers crossed for you @tarun_yadavA . Really fast pace on those two miles! I've never had that ice cream before, but it sounds delicious. I think the best I have had lately is similar, it was praline, caramel, pecan, I think. Anything with caramel is good with me.

My last walk for January. Slow-and-steady, but I'm doing well on my new training program(me). I will be shifting from walking to running in February.
A special "thank you" to @quilteryoyo, @AlphaHowls, @ContraryMaryMary, @teresa502, @Laurz9191, @martaindale, and @WarmJellyfish for your friendship and support, especially on Strava.7 -
Good running y'all
@chris_in_cal good to see you're up and about
@quilteryoyo @Laurz9191 I only do that because I regularly go for long multi-day backpacking trips and come back with a belt hole or two knocked off. At least the locales are typically awesome see pics below.
@ContraryMaryMary mmmm ice cream....I've been eyeing skipping for a while. I should give it a go but I need to learn how first and will need space so it'll be outdoors, in winter lol.
@SwimBikeRunRepeat you're welcome. Now keep moving!
I had to take a walk instead yesterday as I had some laser treatment so was not supposed to get hot. At least the weather was beautiful. 9c/48f
It is time to get prepped for this year's activities. One is a big trail run and the other biggy is backpacking. I am already dreaming up another big backpacking trip this year. I usually do one or two of them each year. I'm lucky I live around these places. I want to get into fastpacking. Ie running and backpacking with a superlight pack at speed. See more, less days.
Photos are from various parts of the Canadian Rockies.
Michelle Lakes. Part of a 3 day trip. I might fastpack it this year in 1.5 days, assuming I don't run into any Grizzlies
I got to hike/backpack up this glacier. This trip 4 days. Glacier travel is tricky and not for the faint hearted.
A lot of the mountains here are unnamed.
Mt Burwash is the left peak. Right one is unnamed. This trip was 5 days. This point we're at 2500m/8250 feet
Anyone want to fast pack the Patagonia W&O circuit? There will be running involved

Will definitely run tomorrow's run at a comfy pace.
Old Tarun definitely would have. Glad to see new Tarun is learning how to run at more than 1 pace!! Hopefully it will help keep you healthy moving forward.
Ooooo ice cream, it's my favorite dessert. So many options. I also love praline/caramel flavors. If I'm in the mood for chocolate I usually go for rocky road. When I'm traveling I often try whatever the local fruity flavor is as they differ so much from country to country. If you have access to HEB (tx grocery chain), I highly recommend their seasonal Poteet strawberry. ♥️5 -
WarmJellyfish wrote: »Anyone want to fast pack the Patagonia W&O circuit? There will be running involved
No, gracias.
Beautiful pics but fast packing doesn't sound like a good time to me. I love hiking but part of what I love is the pace, looking around, really taking it in. I don't want to feel rushed.2 -
Watch update: the Garmin suggested fixes #1&2 didn't work. I really don't want to factory reset my watch but I might have to. I'm taking it with me to the expo to see if there is a Garmin person who might have some insight. I can't even get it to turn off or give me any screen other than the blue triangle so even if I wanted to reset it, I can't get to that option.
At the airport now on my way to CA. I'm looking forward to seeing my friend and checking off another state!9 -

A tad bit colder this morning at 27F but I was dressed appropriately. That wraps up the month for me with 85 miles. Given the polar vortex that hit, I’m good with the runs that I was able to complete. See ya next year January!
Thanks for setting up February for us @AlphaHowls!
@WarmJellyfish – I follow a lot of Appalachian Trail thru-hikers during the season on You-Tube and blogs and none of them have any trouble loosing weight. By the time the get to Maine, most of them have hiker hunger and are bottomless pits but are still loosing weight. I can’t imagine! Beautiful pictures of the Rockies.
Ouch with the hail pelleting you @Mari33a! You are a tough cookie!
Ice cream – there is a resort in Palm Beach, Florida that has an ice cream shop on the grounds. They have a strawberry flavor that is out of this world! It has strawberry jam in it which makes it so rich and flavorful. I will be there for work in a couple of weeks and it’s a great diversion!
Safe travels @martaindale and can’t wait to hear and see you and your race(s)!
