Fitness for glory

Is it vain for me to want to be fit for people to like me?

No, but it might not lead to happiness. Pitching all your hopes on appearance or fitness means you’re gauging your self worth on those things only. I’m pretty sure you have other qualities - wouldn’t it be better to get fit for YOU and then make friends who like you for who you are?

We are social animals. It is very natural to want to be liked. However I will second what claireychn074 stated...don't pin happiness just on that. Focus on being a decent human being with pride in yourself. That may include for many people, including you, being as healthy as you can be.

    Yeah, that.

I got reasonably fit, and lost to a healthy weight . . . but I don't think anyone likes me better than they did when I was less fit and more fat.

Probably that's just from my cranky personality, though.

Seriously, I think other qualities are more important for encouraging others to like us than how we look . . . unless we want mostly shallow people to like us, IMO. Things like being kind, generous, a good listener, a supportive friend, hard working, helpful, etc., are IMO going to increase likeability more than fitness or good looks will, plus tend to attract a better quality crowd.

Fitness is great for lots of reasons, sure. I don't really think of likeability being an important reason for that, though. Just my opinion, though.

I think there are huge benefits to being fit, and being fit can give you self confidence which is a likeable trait (when it doesn't cross over to arrogance...).

But along with what others have said, I think anyone who doesn't like you because you're not fit, or only likes you because you are fit, is not someone I want to be liked by anyway.
