Trying this again

Hi everyone, I've never been particularly overweight, but I have a real problem with my body image. I'm 47, and I struggle with feeling good about myself even when I'm in pretty good shape. I'm hoping getting control of my diet will help me feel like I have some control over my body and I can start to feel better about myself.

    Hello, and welcome!

I think body image issues are quite common. Many people would say mostly among women, but I think it's true for men but they're may be not as comfortable talking about it? (I don't know, since I'm not one. ;) )

I agree that grabbing the reins and taking control of one's health can be empowering, but feel like there really are still two dimensions here that are inter-related but that also can require some separate work. I'm talking about the diet/exercise side of things on the one hand, and the psychological/mindset side on the other. There are various resources available to help with each of those, and maybe a few that address both.

If something like self-valuing or self image is an issue, that may take some explicit attention. Even getting some professional help with that may be a good thing, if it's troublesome and persistent. It should have no more stigma to seek a therapist or similar when we have thought pattern problems, than it is to seek a mechanic when the car isn't running right. Though I haven't worked with a psychologist or other counselor on body image, I have done so in another aspect of my life, and found it helpful.

    Best wishes!
