Depends how much running and other stuff you do. If you run 20+ miles per week (32km), you should probably have dedicated running shoes. If you do heavy weightlifting, you should have dedicated lifting shoes without the cushioned soles which can shift under heavy loads and ruin balance/lead to injury.

If you are a casual runner, or your weightlifting (if any) is moderate at best, a single pair of gym shoes is likely good enough.

    Yes.

Good vid here from World's Strongest Man Mitchell Hooper. He recommends crossfit shoes for the gym as a solid compromise.

I run regularly outdoors. I have different sets of shoes as I find running trainers much more comfortable. And of course it's much cleaner that way, I like running trails and always end up covered in mud.

Probably, because the above are true. But we could give more specific advice if we knew what workouts you do other than the running. If it's lifting that's been answered. But different activities can benefit from certain features or even specialized shoes.

For example, running shoes may not be appropriate for activities that involve fast breaks and rapid change of direction, because they don't provide enough ankle support or lateral stability. They may not be good for dance-aerobics activities because most are somewhat frictiony or grippy, which isn't ideal for activities that involve sliding and pivoting. And so forth.
