Hello, and welcome!
I'm probably being a cranky old git when I say this, but unfortunately I don't think luck enters into it. For myself, I had to commit to the goal, follow the steps to get to that goal, and stick with it patiently and persistently. No luck in there at all, just mindset and work.
How to stay on track? Make the easiest possible plan that will take you to your goal. Too many people seem to arrive here with a plan to revolutionize their eating via some set of restrictive eating rules, maybe one of the trendy named diets; set a low calorie goal for fast weight loss; and stack punitively intense, miserable daily exercise on top of that besides. That usually doesn't end well.
Figuring out how to eat fewer calories while getting overall decent nutrition eating foods we like, and adding some fun new movement - at least tolerable/practical movement - is a less glamorous idea, but IMO more likely to be a path to success. Reaching goal weight and accomplishing improved fitness isn't the big goal, if you ask me: Reaching goal weight and staying there, plus staying healthy including ongoing fitness progress . . . that's the biggie. That relies on finding relatively happy new long-term habits, permanent changes. It's not a project with an end date.
As far as reducing sweets cravings, different things work for different people. For me, making it a point to eat several servings of whole fruit daily helped reduce my cravings for more calorie-dense, nutrition-sparse foods like baked goods and candy. I'm not the only one here who's found that helpful, but I wouldn't claim it works for everyone. Might be worth a try, though. For me, it took will power for a small number of weeks to implement, but the effect kicked in after that short time, and has stuck with me since.
Best wishes: I mentioned work over luck, but that work can have a huge benefit in quality of life improvement, IME. It's worth the effort investment!
