I did a short course of hypnotherapy from a licensed psychotherapist.

I didn't have high expectations, honestly. It was to seek improvement in my sleep interruption insomnia, which at that point had been going on for 2-3 years. I was waking up roughly every 90 minutes all night long, every night. I was desperate. I'd tried every folk remedy, every supplement, multiple OTC meds, in-hospital sleep study, consultation with sleep-specialist medical doctor after that study, and several prescription meds. Nothing from any of that made a significant improvement. Minor improvement, from some, yes.

The hypnotherapy was the most successful intervention of them all. I went from waking around every 90 minutes to sleeping 3-5 hours a lot of nights before my first aware wake-up. That may not sound like much if a person hasn't been there, but the difference was huge subjectively.

Was it the hypnotherapy, or was there an element of placebo effect? Don't know, don't care - I improved. Since I was skeptical going in, but willing to try, maybe placebo effect was a bit less probable than if I'd been a True Believer at the start, I don't know.

I paid for it out of pocket, and it was expensive but not what I'd call exorbitant - say, around a similar price range as a high-quality personal trainer, professional massage therapist, or something like that. I know I'm fortunate to be able to afford even that, in the big picture.

There were 7 sessions. The first was an interview so she could understand my goals, and get some personal information that would help her plan details of the hypnosis sessions. Then, the following 6 sessions were hypnosis. It's been a while, but I think it was one every two weeks? Might have been every week, but not longer than every 2 weeks. Each was different. During the session, she would make a recording of the hypnosis, and I was to replay that recording every night in bed until the next session. At the end, she said I could repeat the sequence of recordings any time I felt the need, either on that same kind of schedule, or switching from one to the next more quickly, but always using them in the original sequence.

If you have questions, I'll try to answer. If I had other issues where I thought it could be useful, and I could find a qualified person, I'd do it again.
