Why is the barcode scanner premium only?

in MyFitnessPal Tech Support Questions

I used to use this app every day a few years ago and loved it now I'm starting to use it again but I don't see why the bar code scanner is premium only I really can't afford 20$ a month and I dont use any of the other features. It should be on free version typing everything in and nothing matches whats on the box and have to make my own food.

    I miss that feature too and totally get the budget constraints as well.
