Is the premium membership worth it?

Depends on whether a person needs some of the premium features in order to accomplish their goals, or wants those features "just because". There is no generic answer.
In addition: People with slow internet connections might want premium so they don't need to wait for the ads to load. Peop.le who only take a thing seriously if they pay money for them might do better with premium, too.
I started with free MFP, all through loss and the starting months of maintenance. I now have premium. I like that it gives me more detailed control over macronutrient goals, and has lots more detailed reporting on how my eating contributes to achieving my nutrition goals. It doesn't track more nutrients than free MFP. Other than the bar code scanner - which I never use because it's time-consuming for me and not always accurate - the logging process is exactly the same between free and premium.
Normally, I recommend people start with the free app, learn the basic logging practice, and see if it suits them. Once they decide the general approach is useful, they'll know enough about MFP to read the list of premium features and decide whether those are worth the money.
If you have specific questions now about particular premium features, ask those questions. I didn't answer the poll because you didn't have a "depends on what the user wants/needs" option.

I tried the trial. It didn't give me anything that I needed. So I'm a free user. Honestly my answer is do the trial or pay for one month and see if it works better for you.

It's a setting you can choose in Settings/Diary Settings, either in free or premium as far as I know. It's in that spot menu-wise in both the phone/tablet app and the web browser version of MFP, though it looks a little different in each of those. Here's how it looks in web browser MFP, since that's a little quicker way for me to get a complete screen grab of the options/explanation on the device I'm using right now.

Totally depends what you want to use it for. I've never had Premium and have achieved my goals with the free version. Others benefit from the ability to change calorie goals by day, set more customised macros, have fasting days. Others like the features that I consider gimmicky, like the meal scan to log.
One mistake people do make that I see is making assumptions about Premium which are wrong, like that the database will be cleaner/more extensive, or that it will track more or different metrics, neither of which are true, and neither of which MFP says will happen.
Give the one month free trial a go if you want, and see, but before you pay money do your research on what Premium actually does and make sure it's stuff you'll need.
