The Optimistic Wreck

44. M. Type II Diabetic for 10+ years. 20+ years smoker (not counting the 5 years I quit). Heart attack a year ago, and an owner of 5 stents (gotta save up for that Jarvic).

When I had to get one of my stents ballooned this year, figured it was time to change TFL (total effing lifestyle).

So, no smoking. Bam, done. Keep the diabetes in check - for the most part, bam, done. Exercise - started walking .5 miles. That was three months or so ago.

Currently walk 3-8 miles a day, 3 times a week; walk at least 1.5 miles on other days. Alternate "arm/chest day" and "leg day" 6 days a week, and a double session with "ab day" every two days.

For months I've been feeling better, more energy, small victories, much better confidence, and better-than-hoped-for triceps and chest. All that "feel good", but with weight gain or weight see-saw while eating like a bird. "It's water weight." "It's muscle gain." "Walk with weights." "You've just plateaued. Keep doing what yer doing". "Metablism."

You know why people give away free advice? ...

Anyway, it took myfitnesspal's diet diary calorie counter and food evaluation to help me pinpoint a HUGE problem: sodium. When everything else is manageable, it's the dang salt keeping me bloated up.

So, here's hoping that cutting the sodium helps!

Anyway, great site. Great diet counter. Just a little question: for more active people looking to gain lean muscle mass, isn't the suggested protein allowance a little low? I think the counter suggests 75 for me, and I'm guessing it should be more like 200.

Don't eat like a bird! You're a full grown man who is exercising, so EAT!

You can change your Protein manually by going to MY HOME> Goals> Change Goals> Custom

A general recommendation is 40/30/30, with 40% being your Carbs.

Set your weight loss goal for "Lose 1 pound per week" and choose an "Active" setting.

With the calorie counter and nutrition log, I've been able to eat A LOT over the last few days, keep sodium down, and stay within calories and carb limits. And it's not that stinkin' hard!

Thanks for the encouragement and guides. I'll be making a few changes.
