Gaining after Hysterectomy

Hello! I just had a hysterectomy in Nov 2024 and since then I've been gaining like crazy! I've gain 30lbs since surgery and cannot lose it. I even do fasting and i might lose like 2-3lbs but it comes back immediately. Any suggestions from other women who've been through this?

Are you weighing and tracking your food? Can you open your diary.

I had total abdominal hysterectomy in 2020. I experienced weight gain immediately post-surgery - fluid retention/ swelling etc - of a few pounds.

I had restrictions on exercise especially any weight lifting (cooking was difficult as I couldn't lift pots and pans!) and forbidden to drive. So I was at the mercy of my boyfriend to shop and cook for me for a couple of weeks, but I prioritised protein and lots of fruit and veggies. Healing from surgery uses extra calories so you shouldn't find you gain much weight even if you eat a little more than usual and exercise less for a few weeks/months.

I found that I dropped back to my pre-op weight without too much difficulty once I could shop and cook my preferred foods.

All I can suggest is that you use MFP to determine your calorie allowance (don't aim for too aggressive loss), log your food (and drink if it contains calories) and just stick with it. It isn't inherently more difficult after surgery. If you are still finding exercise difficult you may have to adjust your calorie allowance but walking is excellent exercise for weight loss and should be possible now after more than 3 months.

You don't mention whether you were overweight or trying to lose weight before the op.

If you think your weight gain is 'crazy' then you need to go the doctor. Gaining weight after surgery is normal because your body is healing. but it shouldn't be 'crazy'. What you can do on your own is analyze how many calories you need in a day and subtract a little from that and see how the weight loss goes. The good news is physics doesn't change because you've had surgery. Try to analyze what you are doing differently before and after the surgery. It's going to be ok.
