Losing weight fast isn't a good idea unless you are super morbidly obese. Even then I wouldn't try for more than 2lbs a week.

She's right: Fast loss is usually a bad plan. It requires a big calorie deficit, either from severely undereating, or from over-exercising, or a combination. Things can happen like fatigue, weakness, hair loss, gallbladder problems, muscle loss, and worse. Further, it's really hard, so it makes giving up more likely . . . and when we give up and go back to old ways, we usually regain any lost pounds, and they bring friends.

Better plan: Moderate weight loss, focusing on finding new habits that will not only be sustainable all the way to losing a meaningful total amount of weight, but that also make it easy to stay at that new, healthier, more attractive weight long term, ideally forever. Most people find maintaining loss harder than losing in the first place.

Those two things, fast loss vs. long-term successful loss, require different mindsets. A gradual loss rate that's easy to stick with can get a person to goal weight in less calendar time than theoretically fast loss that causes bouts of deprivation-triggered over-eating, breaks in the action, or even giving up altogether.

I'd strongly suggest giving it some thought. No matter what you decide, I wish you success: IME, the improved quality of life from reaching and staying at a healthy weight is more than worth the effort it takes to get there.
