Why does MFP need access to my friends' details?

To give you access to my friends, I would first have to obtain their consent. I know some would not agree.

In what context is it asking for this?

I'm guessing this is probably in reference to "find a friend" or a similar feature, in which case I think you may be overthinking it. We ask permission to access your device's contact list so you can invite people to the program. It's a fairly standardized procedure available on basically every program that utilizes social/sharing.
