Struggling with weight loss

hello, I’m just starting my journey with my fitness pal. I’m going through early menopause and while I have been watching my diet and over the last 2 weeks I have started exercising properly I have still managed to put weight on. Have people found the fitness pal to work when you follow the meal plans and work outs on the app? Thanks

Hi there, I'm sorry you've not seen any results on the scale.

Can you clarify what you mean with 'watching what you ate'? Did you guess, use a food scale to weigh every bit of food or did you do anything else, and what? Also if you've started exercising your body might retain more water for muscle healing. It's totally normal, but this fluid has weight of course and will mask fat loss. Overall I'd say wait it out 4-6 weeks as 2 weeks might be too short to see any changes.

I don't use the meal plans or workouts. I cook my own food, weighing and measuring everything, logging the food (and drinks if not calorie-free) and keep to my calorie limit. I lost 22.5 kg (about 50 lb) a few years ago and have kept my weight steady for nearly 5 years.

You need to establish your appropriate calorie limit, log everything that passes your lips, and be active within your own preferred workouts/exercises.

Be patient - say 4 weeks - and re-*kitten* your progress.

If you like the meal plans, do use them but always weigh the food - please don't rely on useless measurements such as "cups" or "spoons".

What does watching my diet and exercising properly mean? Are you eating in a calorie deficit and how much and what types of exercise are you doing?

    Good luck.

First, I acknowledge that weight gain/loss is so much worse as you approach menopause.

I agree with the above posters in that we need a little more clarification in what "watching my diet" means. It takes a bit of extra focus in the beginning to really reign in the complicated method of losing weight. A bit of trial and error is inevitable.

If you haven't already, buy a food scale (Amazon has some great ones for less than $20). Weigh everything you eat. I remember being surprised by how off I always was with meat portions. And use the food diary in the app, but make sure you choose the right item. There are many choices in there that are incorrect or too much of an estimate to be perfect.

And, be patient. If you overdo the calorie cutting and/or exercise and begin to lose too quickly, you will find yourself crashing and burning, and gaining the weight back.
