I had a small amount of slow weight up-creep in about the first 4 years of maintenance, and used calorie counting to slowly creep weight back down again. That was a smaller range, though, maybe 10-15 pounds, all in the same jeans size.

Thirty pounds in 6-8 months would be around 1 to 1.25 pounds gain per week, round numbers. That implies averaging 500-625 calories daily above maintenance. That's a fairly easy excess to attain, if not attentive to changes. It could be a couple of cans of sugar soda/tea most days, or a routine Saturday night indulgent meal with deep-fried app, rich entrée, dessert, drinks. Reduced calorie burn can contribute, and things like changing jobs, commute, hobbies, or home size/configuration can get a person a surprisingly lower calorie budget. It needn't be the same thing on repeat, it can be various things together triggering that effect overall.

Since you're implying it's sudden, have you checked in with your doctor? There are some health conditions, including very treatable ones, that can foster weight gain.

I'm probably not the best person to ask what to do, since I'm a confirmed calorie counter. Almost certainly, the answer is to reduce calorie intake or increase exercise/daily life movement, or a combination. Whether you count the calories, or get there some other way, getting to the right calorie balance is IMO the answer.

If you'd like help from folks where with a more detailed "what to do", we'd need more information about you and your lifestyle: Demographics, eating habits, lifestyle including job's physicality and exercise activity, etc.

    Best wishes!
