welcome to MFP @zorrro1956
That was me in a nutshell until I decided to lose weight and get off my bottom. So, yeah, for me, eating less was definitely a solution. But I didn’t punish myself Instead I took a critical look at what I was eating (85% junk and highly processed foods and candies) I figured out where I could whittle back, make substitutions, “train” myself to enjoy other foods instead
I also resolved to simply start walking daily, shorter walks but more of them, in additions to some gentle yoga I was already doing. As I did this I felt stronger and more energized, and daytime sofa time actually became an annoyance.
Since then I’ve lost about 40% of my starting weight, incorporated cardio, lap swimming, weights, and power yoga.
I feel like I’ve turned the clock back a good thirty or so years. I’m not a unicorn. I’m a formerly obese “senior” who just decided to take control.
My husband is a year older than you, and he has done likewise. He eats what I dish out, thereve been no complaints about less starch, leaner meats, because it’s still all tasty, and I’m careful to ask what he’d like the next week (although the end result is a grunt and “whatever you feel like”). He’s doing tai chi and aquafit several times a week, as well as volunteer work for a couple state parks that requires him doing basic repairs and maintenance on historic sites and trails.
Can’t help you with the getting older part, other than to tell you to embrace it. you can sit around and piss and moan about something you can’t do a darn thing about, or resolve to get off your bottom and enjoy what you’ve got.

and PS we both volunteer around town. It’s very satisfying, gets us out of the house on a regular, planned basis, and we’ve met a lot of people doing that and at the gym, too. Were I still stuck on the sofa scarfing M&Ms and Geneva cookies, I’d doubtless have hit 300 pounds by now, be lonely, and depressed.

If eating less was a solution then diets wouldn't fail and wouldn't need to count calories to help keep from eating too much and gaining weight. My perspective of course.
