What to eat?
Any combination of foods you enjoy that adds up to appropriate calories, and provides something close to good nutrition on average over a small number of days. The MFP default macro percents aren't a terrible starting point for most people, as long as they don't try to lose weight aggressively fast. There's no getting adequate nutrition on too-few calories, no matter how the percents of each macro come out.
As you learn more about nutrition, and as you gain subjective experience with how food choices affect your satiety, energy level, etc., you can adjust your nutritional goals to personalize, if needed.

I've been becoming more attentive to what I eat and how it affects my body, but I will still "cheat" to satisfy a need, and this is okay as long as I immediately go back to what works for to maintain or lose weight.
I've been interested in blood sugar levels, starches turning into sugar quickly, etc. for a while. I'm a "type 2." A few things lately. I've been trying a sprouted grain bread, "Knock Your Sprouts Off" from Aldis. Also blue corn tortilla chips or blue corn taco shells also are suggested. And I've read that sourdough bread is a good choice to help control blood sugar spikes, but portion control is always necessary. Adding things like vinegar, cinnamon, fenugreek and turmeric, along with eating fruits like blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, with plain Greek yogurt all work together for health and controlling sugar levels.
I wasn't too interested in sodium intake until recently. I wanted a Mexican themed meal and bought some refried beans. They were delicious, but later I saw how much sodium was in them. I realized quickly that you can't buy low sodium refried beans, so you need to buy low sodium pinto or black beans and make your own refried beans at home. So now I look for low or no sodium versions of beans and veggies. Yes, you will need to add some salt, for them to have any real flavor, but you control the amounts now.
