can’t help you with fasting. Im not huge on self flagellation, so I never tried it at all during my substantial weight loss.

I just popped in to say I did a double take. New Toy by Lena Lovich is one of my favorite oldies and now it’s running through my head on ear worm mode, lol.

    Simple: Put the fork down.

But like the lady doing a handstand, I'm not a fan of self torture, and there's no reason to do a fast. If this is important for you though then just do it.

Fasting is more stopping - not starting, right?

What do you mean "how do I start"? You start by not eating for 24 hours, which I don't think is necessary, but if that's what you want to do, then just do it.

Pick a time to start that you feel might suit you better, many like diner to diner so say 6pm to 6 pm. Make sure your well hydrated with water, coffee or tea and picking a work day as opposed to a weekend, seems to make being busy easier for a lot of people. Of course if you feel dizzy or fatigued then you might want to adjust the fasting schedule or try a shorter time. Don't take the flippantness of some of the responses the wrong way, the people here are generally very nice and willing to help. 😊

not meaning to be flippant, but so many new people come here having heard that fasting is the ultimate way to the New Them.

To clarify, you’re not going to lose weight any faster via fasting. Sure, some studies show a negligible loss- like under 20 calories a day or some such, but the truth is, fasting is a technique.

Some people find that having one or two large meals in a short window works for them. If it does for you, that’s great.

However, imho? Most those that come here touting fasting as either gone within a day or two because they couldn’t hack it, or end up making adjustments or just dropping it altogether if they do stick it out.

    There’s no harm in experimenting.

I did- And still do- plenty of experimenting with recipes, workouts, timing, calorie goals

Just remember it’s always a work in progress. You’re not beholden to some diet you may discover later was just a fad, a torturous fasting schedule or, ridiculously low (or high!) calorie goal. Flounder around til you find what works for you. There is no shame in floundering as long as you’re working towards a goal of learning what works.

Shame comes with weight gain and loss. I think the hardest thing about changing our habits is eliminating shame.

Anyway, I've said this many times and I'll say it again fasting has absolutely nothing to do with weight loss, although some people do lose weight, so yes, some people do lose weight because of fasting. 😊

In the past I tried 24 hour fasts one or sometimes two days a week. I ate a normal dinner then didn't eat again until dinner the next day. I did drink one cup of black coffee in the morning and drank plenty of water. I tried it for a couple of months because I read about the benefits of intermittent fasting. I was also having trouble maintaining a 500 calorie deficit with an allowance of 1200. During those months, I aimed for a 250 calorie "on paper" deficit on non fasting days. I broke through a plateau and found it easier since on non-fasting days my allowance was more manageable. I liked the pattern of dinner to dinner because that was least disruptive to my family and social life.

I stopped because I read fasting may have caused some hormonal issues in female rats, I know rats are different from humans but I didn't want to take the risk. One tip @LeanneLovrich, I found it was easier to fast on a rest day (a day without a planned workout). I ocasionally have low blood sugar issues during long duration exercise/activity if I eat very low carbs, skip meals, don't eat enough, and in my case if I exercise while fasting. That was actually one of the reasons I stopped (though mainly concern over hormones since I didn't notice any benefits other than weight loss, so it didn't feel worth the possible risk to me).

ETA: It looks like my concerns about hormone balance may be a little outdated, I found this https://today.uic.edu/new-data-on-how-intermittent-fasting-affects-female-hormones/
