Air Fryer Doughnuts

Household crisis. Local gourmet doughnut shop shut down with zero warning. Doughnut Sundays have been a thing in our house for years now.

I’ll be 🤬 if I’m gonna waste calories on Dunkin or Krispy Kreme, and the only other local doughnut shop is a revolting doughnut equivalent of a greasy spoon.

Anyone got any great ideas or recipes for doughnuts - especially apple fritters- in an air fryer? Or tried one of those doughnut “pans” I vaguely remember being a brief trend with any success?

My husband is bereft without his fritter, and zero prospect of getting any. He’s been moping all day.

Unfortunately I would only deep fry a donut, so can't help you there. I will and do have or make donuts periodically once or twice a year for house guests or if my partner, who is a baker, asks me to make them for her which, she then generally takes them to share with other people. Don't think I've bought a commercial donut in 30 or 40 years.

This guys not bad, maybe give this a try.

I have made air fryer ollie bollen (a Dutch raisin doughnut with no hole eaten on New Years). Someone brought me a packet of dough mix from the Netherlands. The name of the confection translates literally to “oil balls” as they are traditionally deep fried. I put small ice cream scoops into mini individual silicone cupcake tins, and sprayed with vegetable oil. They were good, I remember. It was a couple of years ago.

    oh WOW!!!!!

    you guys are the best!

I’ll sit down and look at these in depth this afternoon!!!!!

We split a Dutch baby this morning. As delicious as they are, they feel like three bites and you’re done. I had to supplement with a bowl of cottage cheese. No prob, still reasonable calories for me, but he looked so sad.

So this talk of air fryer doughnuts gave me a craving and I tried some using this recipe:

    https://uitpaulineskeuken.nl/recept/oliebollen-uit-de-airfryer

I made the mistake of adding extra flour because the dough looked so liquid, making them too hard to handle and scoop. If I ever use the recipe again I will increase the sugar and and the raisins, because it depends too much on the icing sugar sprinkle for sweetness.

I did need to turn them over after 3 minutes to brown both sides.

I most often get my flour directly from king arthur (kingarthurbaking.com). They have an extensive baker's product catalog. A couple Christmases ago, I was gifted a donut set (pan and mix) from my daughter. the donuts were ok. baked, not deep fried, though. i still have the pan, have not indulged in the mix again (yet). I hear you about DD … I volunteer (on bicycle) in my local national park, about 50 miles from home. After one of my rides, I get a real "munchies" urge and sometimes drive thru an enroute DD for coffee and donut. Those donuts are like sugar sticks to someone like me who otherwise tries to shun a lot of added sugar. Yech! But there's often nothing else quick and easy on the road, late afternoon. Good luck in your searches.

@springlering62 : Oh god, that's horrible! I will not eat a DD or KK donut. They appear all the time in our break room and I just say NO! They are such cheap crap. Now, every once in a while, bakery donuts show up. One time there was a bacon donut...😋

I have to say that if you have a donut Sunday, you might think about lots of other breakfast baked goods that are easier to make (baked not fried) and unbelievably delicious. I would include in that many good muffin recipes (incredible fresh out of the oven) and coffee cakes. One incredible payoff is that, when you make your own, they can have real butter instead of shortening. Same calories, much better flavor!

    Anyway, best of luck.

A tip on air fryer doughnuts. Mine were a really nice texture straight out of the air fryer. However, on day two they were quite dry and stale. So keep the batch size limited.

so far we’ve done a Dutch baby, and popovers.

I’m going to get some lemon curd from Trader Joe’s. It makes anything taste doughnutty.

air fryer fritters just sound like a massive PITA. He’ll just have to put his Big Boy pants on and realize that times change.
