NEWBIE

I am 60 yrs old. Moved to a different province at tye coast 4 years ago which I'm sure took a much greater toll in me emotionally & physically. I have always battled with acid reflux & the last 2 yrs gut health. So diet has been very challenging for me. I do feel however, without excersing I feel more lethargic, brain fog & miserable. Together with the correct eating & excersise I feel better as a whole. Being single & a stay at home pensioner has its challenges & to try stick to healthy eating takes discipline. Thank you to Fitnesspal for the help I need to strengthen my weaknesses.

The battle against reflux is worth it! It takes a toll on your body otherwise. Cutting alcohol and coffee were the biggest improvements for me. But, if it's plaguing you, you should certainly take the meds. I sleep with an elevated torso if I'm feeling at all acidic at bedtime. (Almost always due to having a drink or two!)
I find that it can be worse when eating at deficit. Your body does all sorts of things to get you to eat, one of which seems to be creating excess stomach acid. Drinking plenty of water seems to help. Eating small meals spread out helps as well.
However: I've adapted to skipping breakfast and eating my first meal at lunch. One factor is that I now drink tea with milk and honey when I get up, rather than coffee. It's soothing and has a bit of caffeine to get me going.
Best of luck!

I started here around the same age, 59 in my case. (I'm 69 now, in weight maintenance.)
I'm also a retiree who lives alone. Though I can see how it could be different for others, I honestly found that status to be an advantage: I don't have to please anyone but myself.
For example, once I committed to weight loss I didn't have anyone else who might want to be eating in a different way that might tempt me to skip some of the changes I'd decided to make.
I also had near-infinite flexibility about exercise or a more active daily life after retirement. At the time of weight loss, I'd already been quite active for a dozen years, having started that pre-retirement and shortly post-widowhood. Some of my married friends need to - and I'm sure enjoy - spending time with their spouses doing shared interests. That can limit the time/energy they have to be active or do exercise activities they enjoy but their spouse doesn't, whereas I can arrange my schedule entirely based on my own interests.
I'm not saying it's better overall to be single, just that it does have some advantages for me when it comes to eating and activity planning.
I hope you're able to find a path that works for you, because I've found reaching a healthy weight to have quality of life benefits that have made getting there more than worth the effort for me. I hope it works out that way for you!
