I just started taking over my life, but I like flavor and spices. Do you have to count ever spice you add? What if i'm just adding some pepper to my potatos do I count that too? I did see if you are adding a tablespoon or more it has calories but what if i'm just adding a little? Thanks for the advise!!

I don't normally count spices. yes, some of them have various things in them, calories or otherwise but I've been doing just fine without them. I something do when I put in a recipe here on MFP.

I don't count spices unless there is sugar in there. And even then, if I am only using a tablespoon or two for the entire recipe, it's just too small to worry about. No point in getting obsessive, and that to me would borderline on that. But if you feel you need to for a short period of time just to see how much it is, do that and then make a decision from there. We each have to find a path that works for us. :)
  • If a single serving I count them unless its salt pepper.
If a batch of 3 or more, no because a tbsp of innamon has 6 cals and divided by a few people is nothing. Either way it's not going to stop weight loss no matter hoe much you use!

I tend to add them to the recipe builder and count them that way. If I just sprinkle some black pepper on a salad or sandwich I don't usually worry about it.

Not usually, but when I make roasted potatoes, I coat them in a hefty serving of veggie spice, and it has a few calories, so I log them. Salt in a recipe gets logged because of the sodium...
    I don't count garlic powder/ginger/cayenne pepper, etc

Thanks! I think I will do that. Just add if its a lot. not if I just add a little here or there. Thanks everyone!!

I count salt just because of the sodium and I'm trying to watch my sodium intake. If you don't need to worry about that, then I wouldn't log them. Although if you use spices frequently it could be a quick add to your log. I think its up to you. I don't log things that have zero nutrition (like coffee) and I know others do, so I think it's just personal preference on how detailed you want to be.

It depends on the spice. A dash of salt or pepper on something, no. If I'm making a recipe which uses a Tablespoon of garlic powder, then definitely. Same with chili powder. It's easy to count them off because they're a powder, but if you'd count a clove of garlic then it's a good idea to count the powder, where 1/4 a tsp of garlic powder is equal to about 1 clove.
  • the calories in spices (if there are any) are so negligible that I don't bother counting them.

Sometimes I count them. I was surprised by some and sodium. Not a big deal tho.

Most of the time I don't add spices to my diary. Makes my diary a bit more interesting to look at when I do though.

I don't bother, unless I'm using some kind of pre-made seasoning packet (like the sachets of chilli spices) because those are often bulked up with cornstarch/flour/sugar.
