New Format

I've been logging in to the diary for 592 consecutive days now and I do not like the new food diary format.

I've been logging into the browser and phone/tablet app for 3624 consecutive days now.
The web browser version of the food diary now looks more like the phone/tablet version. I can see pros and cons. Fundamentally, I don't care one way or the other about the change: I can see how to use it, and plan to just go on with using it.
As someone with a long career history in software development and support, I suspect it was broken, in a behind the scenes sense. This is old software. Old software gets patched and modified over time to the point where it's kind of patched together with metaphorical bailing wire and duct tape. Future changes start to cost more and more to accomplish, and it's easier to accidentally cause bugs when changing it, but harder - more expensive - to find and fix those bugs. At some point in its lifecycle, it really needs to be rewritten from the ground up if the company wants to add new features and functions to it. Putting out a new version that does the same things as the old version can be a step in that kind of process.
Is that what happened here? I don't know. I don't work for MFP, don't have any more behind the scenes insight than any other user has.
