Hi! That does sound frustrating, especially when you're putting in the effort and not seeing the scale move. Hypothyroidism can definitely make weight loss more challenging.
Sometimes adjusting your meds, tracking your intake more closely, or even just switching up your routine can help. Progress isn’t always linear, but it’s still progress.1 -
How long has your weight been unchanged at 230? You say it stopped "all of a sudden". Does that mean you were losing at a good pace, then literally it stopped suddenly . . . or did loss rate taper off gradually over a period of quite a few weeks? Did anything else in your life change when the scale stalled: Job change, home change, eating style, exercise routine, anything significant? How tall/old/active are you, and what's your calorie goal? How do you log/track - food scale, cups/spoons, eyeballing; logging all cheat/oopsie days and every day/every bite, or not quite all?
With more information, we might be able to help you sort out what's going on, and find a path to continuing weight loss success. For sure, some of the old hands would try to help.
Hypothyrodism can increase the challenge of weight loss, if untreated. Medicated properly, a hypothyroid person should be able to lose weight in the same way anyone else does.
In fact, even if untreated, the mechanics of fat loss are the same for people who are hypothyroid, with the unfortunate exception that a hypothyroid person may require fewer calories when shooting for any particular fat loss rate. Generally, that difference isn't huge. Clinical research suggests something around a 5% calorie "penalty", if I recall correctly.
There's a good thread here about weight loss and hypothyroidism. It was written by a guy who is a scientist in the hypothyroidism specialty, himself hypothyroid, who lost weight by calorie counting. I recommend reading it. It's here:
Lots of sources in the blogosphere will tell us hypothyroidism is weight loss doom. That's mostly just nonsense spewed so they can sell us their special book, program, diet plan, workout method, supplement, etc. because they know "the secret". There's no secret. (They say the same stuff about PCOS, menopause, being older, and more.)
Does hypothyroidism make weight loss harder? It can. But everyone has their own hard - things I mentioned in the paragraph above, and more. IME hypothyroidism isn't doom. We just need to find a way to overcome our personal roadblocks, whatever those may be. For sure, if hypothyroid and not medicated, working on that will help.
I'm severely hypothyroid, now properly medicated. I lost weight fine (while also menopausal and already old, those other so-called "dooms"). I'm far from the only one here who has that same experience of losing weight under those circumstances. It's possible. There can be challenges, but there are ways of dealing with them.
Please don't get discouraged and give up. Hang in there, try to work your way through this. There can be a path to success.
Best wishes!
