I have not been very active lately, but I want to get active again. I have a gym membership, but I have not had the incentive to go for the past year. I am going to try chair exercises. I can walk about a block with my trekking poles. I still work 2 part time jobs totaling about 40 hours per week. I am looking for friends that can motivate me.

My gym offers a number of classes specifically focused on senior/”weaker”/cardio rehab patients.

If you’re in a large city or suburban area, look for a hospital with an affiliated gym, or ask your primary care provider if they know of anything similar. Even though my gym belongs to a giant hospital group, a lot of physicians don’t even know about it,, even though the whole hospital community fans out from the gym in every direction, so every few months the gym sends a team out to visit practices to remind them.

My gym has chair yoga, floor stretching, basic yoga, yin, light weights, Aqua fit (varying levels), even Parkinson’s Boxing.

We have several ladies and gents in the mid to late 80’s in these classes, and also taking advantage of private training sessions. (At our hospital gym, all the trainers have masters in some form of exercise science. We also have a staff dietician.)

it also offers “Beach Body” type cardio weight classes, and we have fit participants in their 70’s in there.

Membership is about $35 a month, which is a steal considering pool (with lane reservations available!) and towel service included. Plus emergency pull cords all over the darn place- in the classrooms, weight room, toilets, showers. Everyone on staff has extensive first aid training and pool personnel take a full day of water safety and rescue twice a year.

I’m sure these type gyms aren’t on every corner, but if you’re in a large suburb or city, ask around. 99% of the people in our large suburb have no idea this place exists and is open to the general public. It’s like a private club at Costco prices.

    ps welcome to MFP @utahwalker

I’d just like to mention, we have a couple of 80 somethings that I was gobsmacked when I learned their age. I would have sworn Miss Barbara was late 60’s. She’s 89.

I’m not lying when I say, she’s a babe. Gorgeous.

    It’s never “too late”.
