is there a way for MFP to pick up total calories burned and not just active in Apple watch

My Apple watch 10 syncs nicely with MFP but it only shows active calories not calories burned during an exercise. Can I change that?

Calories burned during exercise are the active calories. Or do you mean it only imports calories earned when you start a workout and not your total calories (active + bmr calories).

You don't want non-exercise calories being transferred from your watch to MFP.
When you select your rate of loss and activity level in the Goal Setting part of MFP, it is assuming the calories as you move around throughout your day as long as you selected the correct activity level. If your watch imports those as "calories burned" into MFP then you are getting double credit for them, you will over eat, and you will not lose weight.
Just use the tools as they are set up, don't overthink it. Only count INTENTIAL exercise (and even then most people only eat back a fraction of those calories "burned" since trackers are notoriously off and over-estimate burns).
