Hello all, I was dieting along and was within about 20lbs of my goal weight when I discovered that my husband and I are expecting! Obviously weight loss is no longer my goal, (those 20 lbs will just have to wait 9 months or so), but I am concerned about maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy and not gaining more than is healthy. I've continued to log my calories and moved my setting up to "maintenance" but was wondering if there was a "pregnancy" option to click that could tell me where my calories are supposed to be. (I also feel like my maintenance was a bit high, but I'm not trying to buck it). After extensive googling, there is a lot out there that says that your calories aren't supposed to go up for the first trimester (which is where I am), and then only go up a few hundred calories a day after that. I wanted to a) see if the MFP community agreed with "google message boards" and b) see if its normal to be STARVING a lot, because I am. I know I'll go over all of this with my doctor, but seeing as my first appointment isn't for a bit, I thought I'd see if y'all had any information to share. Thanks!

Don't listen to anyone here please. Listen to your doctor at your appointment.

For the love of all things good, this ^^^.

Definitely talk to your doctor about your concerns. My only suggestion would be to eat at maintenance until your next visit (which you've stated you switched already). The internet is helpful for all kinds of things, but specific advice isn't really one of them. Congratulations on your upcoming addition!

You can limit yourself during pregnancy, BUT this really affects the baby. People in sub-Saharan Africa have babies every day and live on very little, but that is not necessarily something to strive for :-)

I mean if you are craving donuts, you could try to see whether some 'sugary' fruit like water melon would do the trick, but if you are feeling hungry then just eat. Your body is building reserves for the pregnancy and breastfeeding afterwards. Also it's worth remembering that each country has different advice and the internet can show you advise from all different places, whereas in reality it'll depend on your ethnicity, your body type and your health. Your doctor or midwife will be able to assist you much better.

On a personal level when I fell pregnant with my son I was 143 lbs, at the end of the pregnancy I was 165 lbs, when he was a year old 106 lbs and I lost it without consciously doing anything. I was simply eating better, had less time, moved more and breastfed. With the second one it wasn't as easy hence why I am here now, but don't worry about the after. Enjoy the pregnancy and the time with your husband, enjoy watching this little life growing within you and remember that they won't expel you from MFP if you gain weight or stop logging :-)
