My experience in this career is that there are people who rely on themselves, people who do fine will some support, and people who rely solely on support from others to lose weight.
Coincidentally, the ones that rely on themselves seem to sustain their success once they reach goal much much better than those that rely on support because eventually those that need support may end up losing it when then reach goal (when they leave whatever program they used to lose weight)and consequently weight is regained and the process starts all over again.
Not saying that support is detrimental, but encouraging those that totally rely on it to become more confident in themselves. Don't let lack of support deter you from reaching your goals because even with all the support in the world, it's still gonna come down to you.
Is this scientific fact? Nope. This is completely my opinion from observation and experience. It's not a knock on those who need support. It's just a message that improvement in confidence one's self can be attained along with weight loss.

Yup completely agree... Easier to be accountable to yourself than blaming / making someone else accountable for you letting yourself go...

Support is a plus, but when some lose it they quit, which is why it's more important to gain the moxy needed to complete the goal.

True story! Depending too much on others also gives you a convenient excuse. "I didn't make it to the gym because my gym buddy had to cancel". That doesn't even make sense if you think about it.

And trust me, I get it. My workout partner was out (we work together and workout at the gym in our building) the first two days I got back from vacation last month and I totally let being too busy catching up be an excuse because she wasn't here to push me. Just for the first day though - the 2nd day my brain kicked in and I made up for it with a hardcore workout.
