I have had a few "moments" when sciatica has flared up and bitten me in the you-know-what, but I have mostly has bad back issues for the last 15 years or so that I have to be really careful with to ensure I don't aggrevate it and lay myself up for days/weeks.
So I have found doing lots of warm-up moves before I exercise, lots of stretching moves after I exercise, and always incorporate some kind of core work/back strenghtening into my workouts really helps keep the back injury bug at bay. My doctor gave me some exercises to do the first time I threw my back out and I've rotated through them every time I do strength training pretty religiously.
Not sure what triggered your sciatica, and from my experience the only thing that helps is rest unfortunately, but maybe see if adding some dynamic warm-ups and static stretching can help going forward?
Good luck! Back pain is one of the WORST!
