I ran the Devonport Half this morning - the first in a series of five I’ve signed up for - and recorded a disappointing time. I’m unsurprised though as I’ve been feeling unwell most of the week and subsequently had low energy reserves this morning.
The first 10k was actually ok, but the second loop was awful, especially as we had to run up North Head for the second time (which is very steep and is on grass) - it nearly killed me.
The only consolation was the weather behaved, mostly, and the views were stunning.
More work to do before my next half, which is at the end of November.

I’ve just seen the official results and managed 8th in my age group (of 44) which is better than I expected, so I’m happy about that.
Here are a couple of professional shots of the event - one showcasing the amazing views and highlighting the steepness of North Head (this is the second time up and I had to start running as I saw the photographer 🤭). The other is me tapping the 400m to go sign. The photographer asked me to do that (this pic is now being used as a promo photo) but sadly at this point I still had 11 kilometres plus the 400m to go 🤣

Morning all
Got in 5.5 miles at 10'21
Well done on the Half @ContraryMaryMary - doubly so given you weren't feeling great. And that looks hilly too! Well done!!!
What was post run pigout meal?

Love reading this thread! so glad I joined! It's so inspiring reading everyone's journeys. Heading out to the gym today to hit the treadmill (raining like dogs outside, and I'm just not a "runner in the rain" gal)

Congrats @ContraryMaryMary and @AlphaHowls HUGE achievements this weekend. WOW!!!! 👏
October Goal: 120 deliberate miles walking and running (I think)
10/1: 2.12 miles RHR 64
10/2: 3.12 miles, 1.1 walk RHR 64
10/3: 4.03 miles RHR 63
10/4 5.11 walk 1.1 RHR 62/63
10/5 3.13 RHR 6119.71 miles completed for October.
When I got up this morning I thought wow. everything hurts. Just from 5 miles?!!!! (kind of pissed me off) but seeing that my HR is recovering I got out there and altho I told myself 1 mile would be fine, I ended up stretching out a little and doing a pretty decent 5K. My head is finally getting less stuffy but man oh man some of the stuff coming out of my nose is totally disgusting. 🤧 I will get a walk in later to complete 20+ miles for the month I think.

That's a great half @ContraryMaryMary
I'm up for new running shoes @SummerSkier as I need something for my Christmas list. Probably stick to Asics
Haven't set my target yet though I'm already behind whatever it is 😕

Newbie here to MFP - aiming to get my running MOJO back so 100 miles is my target this month🏃🏻♀️

Happy runnings everyone!
@ContraryMaryMary awesome race! Wish i had your weather yesterday
@SummerSkier I definitely need new thick cushioned shoes….I see Altra Timp in my future plus a Hoka Bindi. Waiting for black friday….
Race report
So yesterday I did a thingy. Signed up for a trail race Elk Point 60k to celebrate my 60th year. Small race, only 30+ runners for this, but was part of a much larger Iron Horse 100miler race. We were running legs 4,5 and 6 of that race.
Race started well before the actual start. Left home 4am, drove 6 hrs to the race which starts at 12pm and then drove 6 hrs back after. All in it was a 24hr trip. No rest…. 😶 I was wired on caffeine. The Gu gels are caffeinated. It was sunny but the wind was brutal, 20 steady gusting to 40kmh. Wind chill was cold Starting temperature was 10c. At night temps dropped to 5c and with the wind felt like -5. Trail wasnt too technical. Down into the river valley, back up, go down again. Whole trail felt like it was all uphill, even the flat bits sloped up. Some sections were very runnable. Some were plain stupid bushwhacking. Discovered there are sand dunes these bits. Some sections had barbwire fences to climb over, under, run alongside. Got nicked by one in a spot on the leg while between between a stupidly knarly bush, hidden pothole covered in tall grass and the fence. Fortunately the cows stayed away from the race course.
For the race itself I was dragging big time. By km 23, it was so slow I seriously thought about dropping out. Got to the aid station, got some food in me, Coke and I was good to go again. Then 2km from the leaving the aid station, the legs started wimping again. Repeat for all 3 legs. Leg one was 23km, 2nd 16km, 3rd 16km. Total 55km. So it wasn't a 60k as advertised but I'll take it. Somehow I just just kept plugging along. I got passed by a number of the 100miler runners. I came in DFL at night 10.30pm. Time on trail was 10 hours 35mins. The organizers were nice enough to wait as I missed the cutoff by 30mins and they had beer and cold pizza waiting too! Bonus. Probably time for me to retire from ultras.
Start
Cool medal
Danger danger
No time for views
Had to go through knarly brush, like in the foreground below
Garmin says, recovery time

@WarmJellyfish great race report! and nonsense on retiring from the ultras! You are amazing and it seems like you really really love these challenges.. Just keep going. (my mantra is get stronger and fitter with age not dial back)

Great races @ContraryMaryMary @WarmJellyfish! Both sounded tough but congrats on getting through them. 💪
@AlphaHowls you too are a beast knocking out a marathon just rolling out of bed.5 -
Did stregnth training on Saturday morning. But ran out of time/energy to do 10km, feeling a bit fragile so did a 5km, some of which I walked.
Runs 3/18. Distance 15km/110km. Weights 2/9

Great job on your Ultra @WarmJellyfish and great job on your Half @ContraryMaryMary !
Way to get up and just run a marathon @AlphaHowls .

I woke up this morning feeling great so headed off to Pilates, followed by a short run.

Happy running all
Thanks @Scott6255 @kgirlhart @daria0919 @SummerSkier (I can get new shoes now, one promise I made to myself if I were to finish the race😂)
Surprisingly, haven't been too sore after the weekend.
Well I've hit my goal of 60kms for the month, in one day 😂
Plan B is now for the rest of the month 100kms to do. Have to keep the joints lubricated.New focus, need to work on speed now. Am super slooooow atm. Too much distance work, not enough speed work.
Trying to get to a 1:15 for a 10k and then maybe to a 1:05 in 6 months. Who knows I might even try to break 60 mins but have never been to. Progession.
Also focus on strength training and mobility for the runs.6 -
Good morning!
1 Oct - 1.5 Miles/5 min JOG!/35 min lower body
2 Oct - Rest
3 Oct - Work intruption
4 Oct - 1.5 Miles/5 min Jog/35 min upper body
5 Oct - Rest (Deep clean house)
6 Oct - 1.5 Miles/5 min Jog/35 min upper bodyGoal: (4.5) 20 Miles / (15) 45 Min Jog / (3) 13 Strength
Moving and grooving! The 5 min jogs are getting better! My calves still act like they haven't seen a mile in decades but no locking up. I tried an apple fitness 10 min workout, it was ok…their clock was weird but they had 3x 20 second sprints at the end…I didn't sprint but picked up the pace. Had to alter strength, specifically the overhead press. My shoulder just can't handle it, we are only using 15lb handweights but due to the type of pain, I suspect my joint just can't do it no matter the amount of supportive strengthing. Oh well, moving on.
Working today but off the next 5 days for a visit from family. Only cancelled one day with my trainer so hopefully I get out the door.

Went outside this morning for a 5 mile run…still feels like summer after the 1st week of October comes to an end 🥵 Sure hope it's cooler in Atlanta next week!

I missed the first three days of running in October due to very long work days/nights but Saturday I ran 10 miles and today 5 miles. Did a strength session in there somewhere. I've been painting my ceilings and walls at home so I'm calling that cross training!
Congratulations on your half @ContraryMaryMary, your marathon @AlphaHowls and the 60K @WarmJellyfish (sounds like a Barkley course).
@Scott6255 - Atlanta can't be worse than Texas can it? I ran a half there once. Once. It was aptly named the Hotlanta Half.

reflux from hell. Meh.

I don't know… I'm kind of sad that I'm running my soul out and my new phone records a slower running pace and shorter distance. I kind of have the feeling that the new phone is more precise, but still. On my usual round that used to be 2.45km I now get 2.35km. Yeah, it's next to nothing, but it makes a substantial pace difference for a slow runner such as me. Btw, I might have beaten the reflux. I'll find out tonight :D6 -
@yirara glad you got the reflux beat! be careful tho because that stuff is really sneaky. (like covid I think). My fitbit and watch never agree on the distance and it does make a significant pace difference. Heck they don't agree with themselves from day to day at the same markers sometimes depending on time of day and wind direction and weather. frustrating tho.

6 Oct - Walked 0.55 miles - Ran 2.55 miles - Around town during work break13.10/80.00 mile goal
Yesterday, I did my walk in two parts. My "new" neighbor's (one's that bought the property next to mine, but only visit twice a year for now) are here, so I walked down to where they are camping for a visit. I planned to only stay an hour, but it was more like 2.5 hours! By the time I left, it was getting dark, so just finished out my mile to keep the streak going.
Today, I worked at daycare from 8 - 5. During my break, I did my wun. It was warmer than I had expected it to be - 81F (27C) so was a sweaty mess when I went back to work. My pace is always better when I run there. Today, the avg running pace was 12:24 min/mile with an avg HR of 145 and max of 162 bpm. It felt pretty good, once I got going. The first running segment was tough, but got easier as I went.
I plan to do the same thing tomorrow, if it isn't raining.

I ran 6 easy miles today. The moon was really bright and pretty. I tried to get a picture, but it just didn't turn out. I saw a deer today. I was thinking that I haven't seen many critters lately and about 2 blocks later here comes the deer crossing the road.

Tuesday 5k today while Miss 13 was at ballet. Super windy out so quite unpleasant.
