The sugars total in MFP includes both added sugar and inherent sugars such as occur in fruit.
Either type, in context of the mix of foods in a meal, is going to be processed by our bodies in the same way. If we get way too much sugar, we're either going to short-change other necessary/useful nutrition, or we're going to eat too many calories. Added sugars make those problems even more likely, because they often occur in foods that aren't nutrient dense for their calorie level, and often aren't filling either.
Personally, I find I wind up in a better place if I focus on getting all my needed nutrition and doing so within calorie goal, rather than by focusing on weeding out all supposedly "bad" things. To me, good nutrition within calorie goal is the real objective, and hyperfocusing on something like trying to weed out sugar or carbs or whatever can still leave me eating in a way that won't deliver decent overall nutrition. I literally pay zero attention to how much sugar I eat. If I'm getting ample protein, healthy fats, fiber, needful micronutrients, probiotics, and that kind of thing, and doing so within my calorie goal . . . so what if there's some sugar in there. YMMV.
