Over 70s

Actually my age is 74. Throughout the years my weight, by the way I’m 1.70m, varied between 89kg-79kg Currently I’m 79 which is not ideal. As years go by weight control gets harder. I’d very much like to hear from fellow MyFitnessPal members how they are coping with weight control and share experiences.

    Hello and welcome!

You might like the thread for age 60+ people, here:

Don't worry if you open that up and see old posts: Like any long-term discussion thread here, all the new posts are at the end, on the high-numbered pages. You can jump straight there with the number/arrow links at the top or bottom of each page of the thread.

I'm turning 70 next month. I joined MFP back in 2015 (as you appear to have originally done, too). I'm about 1.65m (5'5" in American-speak). When I started losing weight I was a little heavier than you are now - 83 kg (183 pounds). I was 59 then. Midway through age 60, I reached my current weight, around 59 kg (130 pounds). Keep in mind that I'm female, so a higher weight than that would probably be your goal. 😉 For nearly 10 years since, my weight has been up and down a little, but within a few pounds of that current weight.

I think losing weight in our later decades is just like losing weight when younger: We need to remodel the way we eat, changing our routine eating habits to be more calorie appropriate. Yes, we can add some exercise and burn a few more calories, but usually those numbers aren't huge. The food side of things is the big deal.

I'm a big fan of the easy plan: Gradual weight loss, experimenting to find enjoyable, filling, practical, affordable ways to eat that result in consuming fewer calories. Patient persistence works. Extreme tactics are more likely to lead to burnout, binges, giving up. Slow and steady wins this race.

For me, the quality of life improvement has been more than worth the effort it took to accomplish. I hope the same will be true for you.

    Best wishes!
