Weight is where I want it but high blood pressure and high cholesterol and pre- diabetes.

My latest doctors visit was scary! All of the above plus something called fatty liver and a lipoma on my kidney. "But, it's not cancer. You're healthy. Just lose some weight". Those were his words.

I am 72 years old, 5 ft 1 and 130 lbs. I lost 20 lbs about a year and a half ago and have kept it off. My head is spinning from this 'diagnosis?'. I am so totally confused.

You're just inside the normal BMI range, but your doctor knows more about your body composition than we do, so it's hard to evaluate his suggestion that you should lose weight. However, some doctors turn to that recommendation in a kneejerk way, and I think kneejerk reactions are a bit more common when we're older patients. (I turn 70 next month, FWIW.)

Will your doctor refer you to a registered dietitian for help? I'm suggesting that because I know that the overall nature of our eating style and nutrition can affect fatty liver, but I'm not expert enough to give you specific, personalized advice. That would be in a registered dietitian's wheelhouse.

Some health conditions are more common as we age, and kidney lipomas are more common among women in the 40-60 age range. Genetics may also influence those, and a history of obesity can matter, too. I don't know whether dietary improvement can have an impact on their progress, but presumably a registered dietitian would have some insight into that, too.
