Appetite suppressant medication

My medical wt loss clinic put me on a low (8 mg) dose of Lomaira (phentermine) to jumpstart weight loss and help tame hunger cravings. Internist says ok, but not forever. I’ve cut back coffee to a single cup/day. The biggest impact has been not getting up to eat in the middle of the night — very welcome. During the day I don’t notice much difference.

I also tried a 15 mg daily dose but it gave me a stomachache and the jitters.

I know some people here don’t like this drug. Anyone happy with it? How long can I stay on it? Are there serious dangers at such a low dose? I’m 71 with no heart or blood pressure issues.

Your medical clinic are probably best placed to say how long you can stay on it and I'd hope no medical clinic would prescribe something that has serious dangers!

I can't comment on being happy, as I've never taken any such medication but, if you previously got up in the night to eat and now you're not doing that, I'd say there's a definite boost to your well-being. If you're not seeing much difference during the day, could you try getting in to the habit of having a glass of water if you feel tempted to snack? If you're still hungry after 15 mins, have a snack - but you'll potentially find that the feeling has passed.

As you may only be taking the drug for a limited time, use this period to play around and learn what helps keep you feeling fuller for longer (many people on here find that eating sufficient protein is a big help) and to investigate what alternative lower calorie foods you can be eating in place of any regular dishes or snacks or ingredients that are high in calories. Still eating enough food to feel full, whilst eating fewer calories, is how you'll lose weight without feeling deprived.

Hate to tell you, as a health care professional, I don't like that drug. Essentially it's a stimulant and has a lot of side effects:

My first reaction was to check the date of the post.... cause figured it must be quite old.

GLP1 drugs obviously have some side effects and there is still a tiny bit of long term unknowns in my own mind.

But given the number of people who are taking them it seems to me that we should be getting close to achieving a believable safety profile, even for my own mind.

We have also had long term experience with Phentermine and the corresponding safety profile of that drug.

Now. Poisons often depends on the dosage. And what you are trying to achieve and what your needs are all come into play.

You are receiving personalized medical attention. Presumably from a professionally with who you have shared your medical history.

The rest of the world, beyond not being qualified, doesn't even have the same information that you and your prescriber share.

Based on what I know about the drug and what I know about myself I would NOT seek to take Phentermine. And if I were convinced to take it, I would aim for minimal dosage and minimal time.

    But that's me. Today.

And at various ages and based on our individual health histories we each have our own goals and challenges and balancing priorities.

And presumably you're dealing with an ethical practitioner who is more influenced by a desire to render professional services in an ethical manner as opposed to just trying to part you from your money.

And if you're not. That's what I would change first.

What does your gp say about all this? If everyone who has direct access to you and your health history is in agreement, then 🤷‍♂️

thanks for the comments. My very conservative GP thinks it’s fine to use as a boost for a limited time, pretty much what everyone's saying. I wasn’t asking for medical advice, more trying to hear what others have experienced/decided.

I have used phentermine about 6 years ago, and just started again this week. I didn't have any serious issues with it. My dr monitored my blood pressure and I kept track of my heart rate. The earlier in the day that I took it, the earlier I felt it wore off. On days when I need to be to work early, I will split the tablet in half and take the first half early morning and the next half at lunch time. The first time I used it, I lost about 55 pounds. I'm hoping for the same success this time. I like the fact that it gives me the energy boost I need to hop on the treadmill or elliptical, even just move. It does give me dry mouth, but that just means I'm drinking more water. Just don't take it too late or you will be up all night. My doctor will only allow you to be on it for 3 months at a time.

    Good luck!
