Lanette - Non-fiction - observations and opinions mostly on the world as it is. Writing 800 to 1,000 words at a time. Possibly to publish as a collection later - already up around 40,000 words this year. Publishing over on Substack as an emailed newsletter—not always weekly, just pretty much when something pushes me to write. Because I do not restrain myself from our taboo subjects here, or the occasional curse word, I seldom say much about it here. In all honesty, my writing can be an acquired taste. I'm not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.

Melanie - The snow looks beautiful. And painful. Cold hurts my joints, cold and wet hurts worst. I absolutely loved Oregon, but don't feel I could have survived another winter there, and that was ten years ago, and significantly south of you. I absolutely admire and respect those of you who can love it.

Did my 15 minutes (I exaggerated earlier, inadvertently) on the elliptical, plus the weights and the shoulder exercises, then I got the bit of shelving put up in the shop. Then got all our tool battery chargers in place, safely set up and charging what needed charging. The last go-round discombobulated everything, so I had to straighten it out and make everything easy to reach.

And that's as complicated as it's going to get today. Time to relax,

    Love,

Had a lovely mini present opening with John this morning. We both had bought each other posh watercolour brushes! Mine is very superior.

The boiler man is coming tomorrow pm.

Done some essential admin tasks. Contributed to a couple of favourite charities for my Christmas 'balm for the mind'. Edited my Waitrose Christmas order, adding our lunch items, as we are using our celebration stuff up today! Sent an M&S birthday gift card to my brother's wife. It says, 'You are a star!' She truly is. It's been such a long haul for the two of them. He is much improved now. I do have a hand painted card to send her.

    Now must wash my hair.

I'm so sorry Carol. I have no help to offer, but big hugs. Hope you find some help here.

Yes Barbara... Just like in the oven. Pierces them with a fork and wraps them in foil. Leaves them there for 6-7 hours on low. House smells wonderful when I get home from work!

😱 Carol, first you are not old or stupid. Grief is a powerful emotion that shows itself in many ways. Technology is both a blessing and a curse. If you have a family member with computer skills, perhaps you can get help from them. The choice I made was to look online for computer repair near me and found a place to take my computer and ask for help. It cost money and time, but the man who helped me was patient and was able to handle my problems. I still have Jake's phone and phone number and email and I check them every day. Some days I am grateful for Jake's phone because I have to use it to call myself to find where I put my phone. I have and extra remote for the TV and have it in a drawer because I keep putting the remote in a strange place. Take it one day at a time.

😀 Machka, I read all your suggestions. What a great list.

😀 Allie, you are accomplishing more than you realize if you are dealing with insurance, spending time with Doris, and driving up to NH. You'll find your healthy eating plan one item at a time. A good protein shake for breakfast is a good start as is having groceries delivered so you don't default to fast food restaurants.

OOh glad you enjoyed them! With the thick and fluffy waffles you nuke them for 30 sec then toaster on lowest setting now. Don't think you can save time by just toasting the frozen waffle.😁👍🏼

Last evening, I was able to video chat with middle son and kids, then birthday son finally popped on. We all talked for quite some time. It does my heart so good. I felt so awful for not being able to send anything to him, like I just failed in the Mommy dept! But its not my fault he's living in kind of a Navy void mail wise! At the end Athena left me a cute message on her Gizmo watch for me. Hearing a 6 yr old say you're the bestest grandma ever is like "ouch my poor heart, its just too cute"!

Michele ~ Thanks for sharing your photos. The new deck looks NEW! Know you will enjoy using it.

Ginny ~ Healing prayers for you.

Terri ~ Glad your brother’s operation was successful and hope he heals quickly.

Lisa ~ I like your new cardigan, and I really like the blue outside walls of your house and the flower beds you created.

Barbara ~ Glad the massages and other means helped your sciatica. My back and leg pain finally subsided after all the walking I did in the hospital my husband was in.

Allie ~ So sorry about Doris’s eye problems causing her to move into assisted living. Glad you are finally feeling a bit better.

Barbie ~ Annie looks great among her toys. Thank you for your encouraging words.

Lanette ~ You are so lucky to have close friends who help you move through life. Your friend K is a blessing to the community.

Flea ~ Your hair looks pretty and it has grown out well.

Rebecca ~ Three sisters who all have talents in diverse ways. Know your parents must have been very proud of all of you.

MO ~ You and Allie are both giving people. You both are a blessing to those who receive.

Machka ~ I wish I had read your post about handling accounts before I messed up. You have good advice. I have printed it. Regarding Amazon, I finally downloaded a PDF Text reader program and was able to add the image of my driver's license to Word. I then sent this to the recovery link and hope I will hear from them.

@dvmmcw7442 - Melanie -thanks for the book ideas. Perhaps I can find them in an audio format. I would not doubt that the Low Back Ability-Brennan app that I am using (also on youtube) is similar. I will check it out. AKA: Dr Sarno his book "The Mindbody Prescription". Nicole Sachs podcast "The Cure For Chronic Pain".
Pretty snow - Looks cold. Today thankfully, we have rain in Memphis. AN indoor walking day for sure.

Lanette - SO you get to see both Mt. Rainier and St Helens. - how fun is that! Interesting news on them for sure. I don't watch the news much.

Barbara - I enjoyed reading your post. Can't think of anything to comment on. So I will just say "hiiiiii"

Heather in UK - Yes - it is nice not to be in pain doing ordinary household tasks. My mom lives alone and I 13 hours away - thankfully my brothers are less than an hour away. As much as I love living in Memphis, Tennessee - (near by...not In the city) - Being this far away does have challenges like that.

Carol the few things I needed to scan I did not use our scanner. It was too old and complicated to run. Instead I went to the library they had a scanning system that I could e-mail what I needed to my e-mail account. From there I downloaded it and then added it as an attachment to whom ever was asking for the info. They no longer hold any of the info that you copy or scan at the library. Doing it this way saved me much frustration and time in the long run.

You can do this! Agree ask grandchildren for help. When you are up to it prioritize the accounts that are costing you money or is a source of your income. This is partly why I never add to auto billing anymore. I figure it will be easier to close the accounts without it. Make sure you have the right documents you will need to close accounts. Most will need a death certificate. Some will return it to you. I was able to complete most of what needed to be done. The only thing I didn't get done was the credit bureaus. I sent what they asked for and then they turned around and wanted power of attorney documentation. I had already shredded this because power of attorney is set up for a living relative and is no longer legal once they pass. Social security was done by the Funeral Home…If you need to apply for Social Security Survior Benefits…That is one piece of business that is done sooner than later.

When we came to the jars of faux caviar, I wasn't happy with the colour. I decided not to risk it, even though they were in date. I have had them in the cupboard for a while! I used anchovies instead and threw away half the blinis.

I then checked for sesame seeds for tonight's tuna steaks. None! Then I checked the date on the wasabi. 2020! And a weird colour! John and I decided to take a foodie trip into Hove as part of our anniversary. We bought Canhams famous Scotch Eggs and a rabbit to cook tomorrow. Then we wandered up to Tesco where we got the sesame and wasabi, leeks for the rabbit, asparagus for tonight, and custard slices for John. In the queue to pay, we got chatting to a bar owner about the difficulties in running a hospitality business these days. Passed the time beautifully! John walked home and I caught the bus as my knee was beginning to struggle. But I must have walked well over a mile. I wanted to see if my new brace made a difference. I hadn't taken any pain killers. It helped.

I have a couple of recorded programmes we can watch tonight, and I'm expecting a doctor's phone appointment at 7 about the estrogen pessaries I use for the cystitis. We should have eaten the main course by then. When I made the appointment, I forgot it was our anniversary.

    The cards we made.

    Morning, my dears,

    image.png

I really do love the big weather radar maps - they show how many of us are in one picture, without showing any of us! This current system stretches all the way down to Okie in the Hill Country of Texas, over to Rita in New Mexico, to Rori in Colorado, over my head to Sherry in Tennessee, and soon will be moving toward Kylia and Ginny in Ohio. I don't know why it makes me happy, but it does.

The rain is supposed to start again in about a half hour. I skated out between the raindrops and did a quick shop at Walmart to get some baking potatoes, which are now in the crockpot (thank you, Carla!) and a few other things we needed, like Red Diamond iced tea bags to brew a gallon at a time.

Not a lot else going on. Need to get bed linens in the wash, and then and go get my yoga and rowing done while that is swooshing. After that, just relaxing and crocheting this afternoon, I think.

Thoughts out to those in pain or distress, hope it's a peaceful and joyful Tuesday for everyone.

    Later,
    Lisa in AR

I pulled a page from Machka's book and took a bike selfie yesterday. I went for a lunch hour ride as I didn't have anyone to cook for. So fun in the snow with these fat tires. I still love the speed of going downhill- makes me feel like I did in my younger years ski racing. I know I should be wearing my new helmet- it's something I have to get used to. The orange vest is so the hunters don't shoot at me!

    IMG_5710.jpeg IMG_5709.jpeg

Thankful to whoever invented fat bikes 🙂

Tired today. Fell out of bed last night!! Landed on my knee replacement and hip. They burned for a while but I am ok this morning. High bed. I know I was dreaming when it happened but boy was I surprised when I felt myself falling 😬

Lanette- we will continue to host students. Most have been pretty good up to now.
I remember when Mt St Helen's erupted. We were in our way to a summer ski camp at Mt Hood and the highway ditches looked like they were full of snow from the ash.

Lisa- I have tried the mouse wall plug ins that are supposed to emit a sound they stay away from. Ours must be deaf because it made no difference 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mo- those medical records are sooooooo important. Most disciplinary actions in our profession have some degree of poor record keeping.

Rebecca- your sister's physical condition is sad. What led her there? She sounded so talented.
Your GDs message melted my heart. My favourite part of the day is when my 3 year old grandson comes in the house yelling "Baba where are you?!"

Flea- nice do! Glad to see you are coming back from chemo 😊

Heather- Happy anniversary 🎉 I hope you enjoy many more.

Carol- Old and stupid?! Huh?! The brain protects itself during overwhelming times of grief.Be kind to yourself- your healing is just beginning 🩷

Sherry- hope you find something helpful in those resources. I try everything in my power to reduce chronic pain.

    Take care of yourselves 💕

Awe, sweet of you to say. It was hard to find my way Freshman year of HS because everyone was still singing praises regarding my middle sister who had just graduated. Shoes I couldn't fill! I remember going out for basketball, and I went up for a lay up, and it was pathetic. The coach said, "are you really Cindy's sister"? Uugh! Then like I tried to play piano but she hogged the piano all the time because she had to practice. But I found my own thing in time.

I must say Carol, you are doing well! You might not think so, but you are! We all will lose our husbands one day, and we look to the members here who have weathered the storm of it all. You are evidence that though death of a spouse is devastating, that you still stand. You are reaching out for support. Do you know how positive that is? Well I am proud of you. Keep showing up here periodically. We got you!💖
